SMALL RETURNS

--------------

One of the chores performed by boys at Bethany is that of milking the goats. Each morning and evening two boys can be seen walking barefooted to the pasture armed with stool and milk pails. The goats sound out their greetings as they watch the boys approach.

One evening the boys set down the stool and pail by goat number one. One boy struggled to hold her still while the other milked her. Setting aside the pail of milk they turned their attention to the next goat. Buckie, the little boy goat standing near by, looked at the pail of fresh warm milk and could not resist temptation. When the boys turned around, there stood an empty milk pail, also a fat and saucy little goat smiling at them.

They went on to milk the third goat. Before they were through, this goat had kicked over a pail of milk. With what little milk was left, two very disgusted boys stomped back to headquarters.

MISSIONS EMPHASIZED IN
WEEKEND SERVICES

--------------

Once again we have been especially favored by visits from foreign missionaries. Our Sunday services on May 22 were given to Rev. and Mrs. Gerald Fish, missionaries to Kenya, Africa, under the World Gospel Mission. The following Sunday we enjoyed having with us Rev. and Mrs. Virgil Kirkpatrick and sons, also from Africa. Their songs, testimonies, and stirring messages were an inspiration to us all.

What if I should be called today
To pass from this old world away
Unto the judgment seat.
What if I in this race should run
Before another rising sun
Into Eternity.
I think, I plan to work today
But e're one hour has passed away
My Lord may come.
Is all my work without though of fame
Performed in exalting His Holy Name
Should I be called today.
Rev. Harry R. Stockton, Pastor

Linda was telling Mrs. Stockton about Miss Burt's illness.

“You know Miss Burt was awful sick, but we prayed and prayed for her – and do you know what they found?!!! ROCKS!!!”

Miss Jewell was checking teeth as new children enter the Home.

“Does that tooth hurt you, Chester?” she asked.

“Oh yes,” answered Chester. “Why last winter it hurt so bad I couldn't even chew bubble gum.”

INDEPENDENCE DAY
ACTIVITIES

---------------

For the last two years our Independence Day celebration has been a picnic at the Dessie Scott Children's Home, and we recall with pleasure those delightful occasions. However, this year the event was reversed when we invited the neighboring group to come to Bethany for the picnic.

Thus it was that a note of excitement and gaiety pervaded the atmosphere as the Fourth of July dawned upon us. At 10:30 some 65 or 70 children and workers from the Dessie Scott Home arrived in their big farm truck. We gathered at the parking lost for general announcements, and then off we went in our respective age groups to playground and ball park, where games and races were held.

Following the picnic lunch, served cafeteria style in the dining hall, all gathered in the church for a brief devotional period. There were several musical numbers * Miss Markley, our upper grades teacher, * from both groups, two readings by and several other interesting selections.

Special rides and treats of ice cream followed at 2:30, and then a workers' ball game was organized. But time flies, and soon it was time for our visitors to leave. We had had a happy day, and had once again enjoyed fellowship with other Christian *ffriends.

Even as we recalled the events of the day, we did not forget its significance. We were made thankful that ours is a land of freedom and liberty, and our hearts were raised in prayer to God for the welfare of our nation and its leaders.

“Long may our land be bright
With freedom's holy light;
Protect us by they might,
Great God, our King!”

NEW GLANCES

goats for Bethany as well as other items. A Christian work there was no longer able to continue on with their schedule because of ill health of the workers. So Rev. and Mrs. Shaw desired to have their possessions continue on in the Lord's work. Now this means that we at Bethany can enjoy the nutritious glasses of milk as produced by the goats. AT the same time the goats have provided an extra interest for our boys. They were very saddened the other evening to find that one of the goats had become entangled in its chain and choked itself. While its body was still warm, haste was taken in preparing the meat for further use in the kitchen and dining room.

Playgrounds

--------------

Recent days have been spent in preparation of the centralized playground that we have felt to be needed for our children. Many friends shared with us our thought that after children had performed their menial tasks of labor, they should have some means of recreation. Hence through the gifts of many friends at Christmas time, some pieces of playground equipment have been purchased for the playground, which is now located in the “playbowl” between the store and Road 1261. Inasmuch as the place is not fully completed, we will not be able to have a picture of this area until the next issue of THE BETHANY NEWS. The plans call for swings, slide, seesaw, giant strides, horseshoe and quoit courts, shuffleboard courts, and badminton court. During another summer, if finances permit, we hope to include on the playground a skate walk, which will give our children a place to prove the roller skates that are often given them.

Workers:

---------

In the past three months, many new faces have been seen at Bethany. We do thank God for every worker that has come, whether for a short stay or permanently. We recall, as this issue goes to press, that several new workers have arrived, namely: Miss Westine Newton, R.N.; Rev. and Mrs. Harold Markel, Mrs Bertha VanAvery, Mrs. Lillie Carlson, and Mr. Donald Crowder. Though some of these have come as summer workers only, yet the valuable assistance of each is deeply appreciated. Again we are made to rejoice that God is faithful in supplying workers, as well as other needs of the Home.

Yes, affectionate greetings were given only a few days ago as two new members came into the Bethany family via the “stork-line.” The first to arrive was
