In 1848 the lower part of Claiborne became Bienville Parish. Bienville parish is named for "Father of Louisiana", Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Bienville founder of New Orleans and the first French Governor of Louisiana. The first parish seat was Sparta. In 1890 an election was held to move the parish seat to Arcadia, and Arcadia was selected over Bienville, and Gibsland by 65 votes. The highest point in Louisiana, Mt. Driskill, 535 feet in elevation, is located in Bienville Parish. The notorious bandits Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were killed when captured in Bienville Parish in 1934. .
