Catahoula Parish French: Paroisse de Catahoula Their is some disagreement on the actual formation of Catahoula Parish. The The Territorial Legislature, appointed by Congress, recognized Catahoula Parish in 1805 when it established the original 12 counties. Catahoula Parish was formed on March 23, 1808 from Ouachita County.. The parish derived its name from the Tensas Indian name "catoola", which means big, clear lake. The parish seat of Catahoula is Harrisonburg. In 1818 Mr. John Harrison had the town surveyed and plotted into lots.
