DeSoto Parish

Founded in 1843 from parts of Caddo and Natchitoches parishes

The parish was named after the Marcel DeSoto, who led the first group of European settlers to a settlement historically known as Bayou Pierre. According to the DeSoto government office website, it was NOT named after Hernando de Soto who explored and discovered the Mississippi River.
The parish's name is also commonly misspelled as "De Soto Parish," but it is properly spelled following the settler's name as "DeSoto Parish."

There were a number of Civil War battles fought in this parish.
