Monday night at

after an illness
of three months.
He was 62. Born
in Italy, he
lived Washington
county and
engaged in the
grocery business
until years ago
when he moved to
Shreveport. He
engaged in
grocery business
at Shreveport
when he was
taken ill. He
leaves a
brother, John
Greco of Baton
Rouge, a sister
and four
brothers in
Italy; two I
nieces, Mrs.

a nephew

La.— William
''Lum'' York, a
musician and
comedian who
played with Hank
Williams and
other country
music stars, has
died of heart
disease at the
age of 85.
Mr. York, a
native of
Elmore, Ala.,
was a bass
player with
Williams and his
Driftin' Cowboys
band in the
1940s. He also
played with
other stars,
including Marty
Robbins.
He died Sunday
at a Baton Rouge
hospital. Mr.
York was a
member of the
Driftin' Cowboys
from 1944-1949,
including
Williams'
1948-49
residency at the
Louisiana
Hayride in
Shreveport. Mr.
York said
Williams paid
him $20 a week
and room and
board, which he
said was a lot
of money back
then.
"Lovesick
Blues" in
1949 took
Williams' to the
Grand Ole Opry
in Nashville.
York and the
Driftin' Cowboys
stayed behind in
Shreveport. York
later got a job
in Nashville but
returned to
Shreveport
because he
didn't like it.
Lefty Frizzell's
band in 1952
hired York. He
later played
with Marty
Robbins and
George Morgan.
After his stint
with the Driftin'
Cowboys and
others, York
played with pop
and bluegrass
bands. He also
worked for the
East Baton Rouge
School Board. |
