Pointe Coupee Parish
Point Coupee is the oldest settlement on the lower Mississippi, having been made by some wandering Canadian trappers as early as 1708. Bienville established this place as a military post, before the commencement of New Orleans. The fort was moved in 1722 to an area near the present St. Francisville Ferry landing. In the Early days Point Coupee was called "Cut Point". This area was a part of the Mississippi where there was in a bend in the river, the trappers found themselves cut off and during there travels wound back up at the river where they had entered from, hence the name Cut Point, now known as Point Coupee. Today the bend in the River has sealed itself off and is now known as the False River. In 1808 Pointe Coupee Parish established the States first public schools. It was home to Julien Poydras, the father of education in Louisiana. By an act of the legislature of the territory of Orleans, approved 1812, Pointe Coupee was incorporated as the twelfth parish. The courthouse was established at St. Francis until it burned down in 1846, having been occupied for more than a century. In 1848, by a vote of the people, the parish seat was removed to New Road, on False river.
