AMITE,
La., town and
parish-seat of
Tangipahoa Parish,
65 miles northwest
of New Orleans, on
the Tangipahoa River
and the Illinois
Central Railroad. It
is located in a
thriving
agricultural region
and has a good trade
in corn, cotton,
fruit and
vegetables.
Irrigation is an
important factor in
crop raising. The
town was destroyed
by a cyclone in
1908, but was
reconstructed within
a few months. Pop.
2,200.
