It was one of the Florida Parishes named Baton Rouge Parish. Then it was divided into East and West Baton Rouge with the river being the dividing line between the two parishes.. Early land records date the parish to 1763 as part of the Louisiana Purchase territory. The Parish of Baton Rouge was created in 1807 as part of the Territory of New Orleans and named in 1810 in order to distinguish it from the eastern parish on the opposite bank of the river. The parish seat is Port Allen. West Baton Rouge was first settled by Acadian exiles, who recognized the value of the Mississippi and the rich soil here. Largely an agricultural parish until the 1960s, the parish is now home to one of the largest deep-water ports in the world.
