Gen. H. E. McCulloch, P. A. C. S., commanding the North Sub-District of Texas. Is now Brigadier General, commanding the 2d Brigade, Texas Division, U. C. Burgwyn, Capt. William Hyslop Sumner  - born at Jamaica Plans, near Boston, Mass., July 23, 1845. At age of 15 was appointed Drill Master of Camp Instruction at Crabtree Creek, near Raleigh. Later made Lieutenant of Company H, 35th N. C. Infantry. After Battle of Fredericksburg promoted to Captain. Transferred in 1864 to the staff of General Clingman as Assistant Adjutant General. Severely wounded at Cold Harbor, May 31, 1864. Taken prisoner at Fort Harrison and in prison till spring of 1865. Was Colonel of 5th Regiment, Maryland National Guard, in 1880. Was Adjutant General of the North Carolina Division of the U. C. V., with the rank of Colonel, and General Carr's Chief of Staff in 1900.
