1899-03-08 The Sun
Wife of A Former Governor of Maryland Passes Away At Her Home in Washington
Washington, March 7.- Mrs. Mary Carter Carroll, wife of ex-Gov. John Lee Carroll, of Maryland, died at the family's winter home, 1753 N. Street Northwest, at 8 0'clock this morning. She had been a sufferer from a complication of aliments for several years.

Mrs. Carroll was the daughter of the late Judge Lucus P. Thompson, of Staunton, Va., and fifty-two years of age. She was the second wife of ex-Governor Carroll. Their marriage took place at the Cathedral, in Baltimore, in April 1877, while Mr. Carroll was Governor of Maryland. the marriage was private, only immediate members of the two families being present. The doors of the Cathedral were locked, and the bridal party and relatives passed through the Cardinal's residence to the Cathedral. Rev. Father Lee, a cousin of the groom, celebrated the nuptial mass.

Mrs. Carroll was one of six sisters noted for their beauty and prominent in society. Three of them married three brothers. Miss Eleanor married Mr. R. G. Harper Carroll, and has been dead for some years; Miss Caroline T. married Mr. Charles Carroll, and is still living. Mrs. Carroll spent about sixteen years with her sister, Mrs. Charles Carroll, in Rome, Paris and other cities of Europe before her marriage to Governor Carroll. During the summer months ex-Governor and Mrs. Carroll lived at the historic family estate, Doughoregan Manor, in Howard county.

Mrs. Carroll is survived by the ex-Governor and one son, Mr. Phillip C. Carroll, about eighteen years of age, and a student at Harvard College. She also leaves three sisters; Mrs. Charles Carroll, of Carroliton Manor; Mrs. Robert Hull, 1020 Cathedral street, Baltimore, and Miss Alice Thompson, of Washington. She was a devoted Catholic, and during the summers attended the chapel at Dougoregan Manor.

Mrs. Herbert Robins, ex-Governor Carroll's only daughter in America, was with the family when Mrs. Carroll died. The ex=Governor's first wife was the only child of Mr. Royal Phelps, of New York. Children surviving her, in addition to Mrs. Robbins, are Madame de Kergolay and Madame de La Grange, who lived in Paris, and two sons, Charles Carroll, who resides in France, and Royal Phelps Carroll, of New York Ex-Governor Carroll is a son of Charles Carroll and a great-grandson of the signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Mrs. Carroll was well known in Baltimore, where , earlier in life, she took part in many of the leading social functions.

Requiem mass will be celebrated at St. Matthew's Church on Friday, morning, after which the remains will be taken to Baltimore and placed in the family vault at Bennie Bras Cemetery. [Submitted Pam Rathbone]
