RICHARD CHESHIRE to JOSIAS HENDON

This INDENTURE made this the 6th day of April Anno Domino Seventeen Hundred and thirty-four BETWEEN Elizabeth Cheshire of County and Province aforesaid, Spinster of the one part, and Josias Hendon of the same County and Province, Planter, of the other part.

WITNESSETH that the said Elizabeth Cheshire being poor and unable to support herself and her child hath bound, bound and put by these presents doth bind and put her son Richard (who was three years old last August) to the aforesaid Josias Hendon as an Apprenticed Servant until he shall arrive at the age of Twenty and One years fully to the Compleat and ended during which time and term the said Richard his said Master well and faithfully shall serve his lawful commands every where willingly shall Obey and Do. He shall do no hurt or damage to his said Master or Consent to any to be done by others, but to his power shall hinder the same or Fire notice thereof to his said Master, he shall not waste the goods of his said Master nor lend them to any person without his consent. He shall not frequent Ordinarys, Taverns or Tippling Houses, except it be in doing his said Master's business there.

He shall not during his Indenture play at Cards or any other unlawful game, he shall not either by day or night absent himself from his said Master's Service, but in all things as a good and faithful servant shall endear himself to his said Master and quietly, honestly & Peacably behave himself toward all other persons. In consideration whereof the said Josias Hendon will Covenant and Agree to and with the said Elizabeth, that he the said Josias, during the Term aforesaid will find for and allow unto the said Richard, meat and drink, washing, lodging and apparel fit and convenient of an Apprenticed Servant, and that he the said Josias will instruct the said Richard in and learn him said Occupation or business of a Planter and Teach or cause to be taught the said Richard the Creed and the Lords Prayer and Ten Commandments and at the Expiration of the said Richard's time, aforesaid will give to the said Richard, one heavy coat and britches, one cotten waist coat, two shirts, a pair of shoes and stockings and one hat.

And the said Elizabeth doth further Covenant for and with the said Josias and his Executors and Administrators that if it shall so happen that the said Josias shall die before the said Richard shall arrive at the Age of Twenty and One years that then the said Richard shall faithfully serve the remaining part of his time which shall be unexpired at the death of the said Josias (to wit) the said Richard shall arrive to Twenty and One years with the said Josias' son, William, and in case he shall die before the said Richard shall be of age aforesaid then Richard shall serve the remaining years of said time to the said Josias' son Isham. The aforesaid William or Isham shall comply with such agreements as were mentioned above to be done and pre-formed or any part of the said Josias.
