Be it remembered that on this twenty eighth day of march eighteen hundred and eighteen Before the subscriber an associate Judge of the first Judicial District of the state of Maryland ( Comprising the Counties of Saint Marys, Charles and Prince Georges) Personally appears Adam Adams a free black citizen of Charles County in the District and state aforesaid, and being duly sworn on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God deposeth and saith, that he enlisted as a private soldier with Lieutenant John Mitchell in Captain Henry Gaithers Company, first Maryland Regiment in May seventeen hundred and seventy seven, for and during the continuance of the war, and that he continued to serve as Such until duly discharged in November seventeen hundred and eighty three, when the Maryland line was discharged at Annapolis, and that by reason of his reduced circumstances in life, he is now in need of assistantance [sic] from his Country for support

Be it Remembered that on this twenty eighth day of March eighteen hundred and eighteen Before the subscriber an associate Judge for the first Judicial District of the state of Maryland, personally appears Colonel William Bruce late a Captain in the first Maryland Regiment of the Continental Army and made oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that he is personally acquainted with Adam Adams in the preceding deposition mentioned that he knew said Adams while belonging to the Army during the Revolutionary war, and saw him often and for a long time serving in the first Regiment

of the Maryland line, in the continental service, that the said Adams now lives in Charles County aforesaid, and he verily believes is in indigent circumstances and this deponent further believes the facts stated in the preceding deposition to be true.. [in diff. handwriting] and I now transmit the proceedings in this case to the Secretary of War being satisfied [word crossed out] that the within named Adam Adams, is fully entitled to pension under the provisions of the law of the 18 March 1818.

I hereby certify that Edmund Key Gentleman before whom the within affidavits appear to have been made and whose name is thereto subscribed was at the time of so doing one of the associate Judges of the first Judicial District of the state of Maryland Comprehending the Counties of Saint Marys Charles and Prince Georges, duly Commissioned and sworn; and to all whose official acts as such full faith and Credit is and ought to be given as well in Courts of Justice as thereout.

It appearing to my satisfaction that Adam Adams the applicant in the preceding depositions named served as a private soldier in the Revolutionary war against the common enemy as therein stated and that by reason of his reduced circumstances in life, he is now in need of assistance from his country for support, I have the honor to transmit to the department of war the testimony in the case and the proceedings had thereon in conformity to an act of the congress of the United States entitled "an Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War.

On this 5 day of June 1820 personally appears in open Court, being a Court of record for said County, Adam Addams aged fifty seven years, resident in Charles County in said District, who being first duly sworn, according to law, doth on his oath declare that he served in the revolutionary war as follow: In the first Maryland Regiment commanded by General William Smallwood, in a company commanded by Capt. Henry Gaither attached to the Maryland line, that the time he served in the American revolutionary war was from the year 1776 'til the year 1783, that the date of the original declaration is the 28th day of March 1818, the number of his pension certificate is 327. And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner disposed of my property, or any part thereof, with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land & naval service of the United States in the revolutionary War" passed on the 18th day of March 1818; and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me, any property or securities, contracts or debts due to me, nor have I any income other than what is contained in the Schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed -

2 Draught horses, 2 milch cows, 4 yearlings, 1 calf, 3 hogs, 40 dollars annual income from the State of Maryland. Adam [his mark] Addams

I, Edmund Key, one of the judges of the first judicial District of Maryland (comprehending the counties of St. Marys, Charles, and Prince Georges) do hereby certify that Adam Adams the applicant abovenamed, appeared in Charles County Corut, and made affidavit to the truth of the facts setforth in the aforegoing deposition, that the said Court is expressly made a Court of record by an act of the General Assembly of Maryland passed at November Session eighteen hundred and one, proceeding according to the course of the common law, keeping a record of their proceedings, having the power of fine & imprisonment and unlimited jurisdiction both civil and criminal.
I further certify that I have adjudged the property (exclusive

of the annuity) contained in the preceding Schedule to be of the value of eighty eight dollars.

APPLICATION FOR A NEW CERTIFICATE.
County of Charles ss. State of Maryland
On this twenty first day of November 1837, before me, the subscriber, a Justice of the Peace for the said county of Charles personally appeared Adam Adams who, on his oath, declares that he is the same person who formerly belonged to the company commanded by Captain Henry Gaither or Gater in the first Md. regiment commanded by Colonel Adams in the service of the United States; that his name was placed on the pension roll of the State of Maryland that he received a certificate of that fact under the signature and seal of the Secretary of War; which certificate, on or about the twentyeth day of April 1837 at or near Pleasant Hill in Charles County and State of Maryland he lost, or mislaid the said Certificate which he has never since seen or heard from.

Spalding"] that he has seen his certificate and written his papers for him, or got them printed for the last ten years (or nearly) that he is the identical person who for A long time has been drawing a pension of forty Dollars pr year from the State of Maryland, and Also that he is the identical Adam Adams who has been in possession of a a certificate from the War Department, a copy of which is in hand
And further more that the said John Spalding I do hereby certify is a person of veracity.

Sir,
I wrote you at the instance of old Adam Adams some five[?] days ago requesting you to send me a form (it being lost or mislaid) to enable him to procure his pension for revolutionary services.
The form you did me the honor of forwarding requires the magistrate to certify that the above is a true copy of an original certificate

now in his possession. Upon further inquiry of this poor and indigent old man I learn of him that it is only the original certificate he wants. He having all the other necessary papers and having lost or mislaid the aforesaid certificate.
You will confer a great favor upon this poor old man by acting for him as will enable him to procure his pension.
He lives immediately in my neighbourhood and has here lived since my earliest recollection. His identity is beyond a matter of doubt.
