Name Changes

An act for altering the name of Thomas Jackson Greenwood, of Newton, in the County of Middlesex, and permitting him to take the name of Alexander Shephard.  Whereas the said Thomas Jackson Greenwood, by the death of his natural father was in infancy left an orphan, whose education has been attended to by Mr. Alexander Shepard, who having no son, the said Thomas Jackson Greenwood desires to take the name of his benefactor: Be it therefore enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, in General Court assembled, and by the suthority of the same, that Thomas Jackson Greenwood be, and he hereby is allowed to take the name of Alexander Shephard, and on all and every occasion hereafter to make the name of Alexander Shephard his proper Christian and surname; and by that name he shall be considered in all processes and records whatever. An act authorizing Lewis Ansart de Maresquelle, to omit the addition of De Maresquelle, and to be called and known by the name of Lewis Ansart.  Whereas Lewis Ansart de maresquelle, of Dracut, in the county of Middlesex, Esq., has petitioned this court, praying that he may be authorized to omit the addition of de Maresquelle, and that he may be called and known by the name Lewis Ansart, which are his Christian and family names: Be it therefore enacted, etc., as follows: That the said Lewis Ansart de Maresquelle be, and he hereby is allowed and authorized to omit the said addition of de Maresquelle, and that he be hereafter known and called by the name of Lewis Ansart. An act to change the names of Billy Hager, Silvanus Coleman the third, Alexander McLeod Clark, John Tyler, Rodolphus Stratton, James Allen, and John Parkman.  Be it enacted, etc., as follows: That from and after the passing of this act, Billy Hager, of Marlborough, in the county of Middlesex, son of William Hager, of said Marlborough, shall be allowed to take the name of William Hager; that Silvanus Coleman, the third of that name, of Nantucket, in the county of Nantucket, son of Jonathan Coleman, of said Nantucket, shall be allowed to take the name of Davis Coleman; the Alexander McLeod Clark, of Medfield, in the county of Norfolk, son of Elias Clark, of said Medfield, shall be allowed to take the name of Alexander Clark; that John Tyler, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, son of John Tyler, late of Mendon, in the county of Worcester, deceased, shall be allowed to take the name of John Eugene Tyler; that Rodolphus Stratton, of Northfield, in the county of Hampshire, shall be allowed to take the name of Adolphus Smith; that James Allen of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, son of Thomas Allen, of Pasquetank county, in the state of North Carolina, shall be allowed to take the name of James Armour Allen; and that John Parkman, of said Boston, son of William Parkman, of Concord, in the county of Middlesex, shall be allowed to take the name of John Augustus Parkman; and said persons shall in future be respectively known and called by the names which they are respectively allowed to take as aforesaid, and the same shall be considered as their only proper names, to all intents and purposes.  (March 7, 1801)

An act to change the name of Samuel M. Bumside, of Charlestown, County of Middlesex, and to render valid the doings of said Samuel, under the name of Samuel M. Burnside.  Be it enacted, etc., as follows: That Samuel M. Bumside, of Charlestown, in the county of Middlesex, shall be allowed to take the name of Samuel M. Burnside, and that in future he be known by the same, as his only legal and proper name, and that all the acts which heretofore he may have done, and performed, by the name of Samuel M. Burnside be and hereby are ratified and confirmed as far as respects the use of said name.  (November 17, 1808)

that Aira Kenny, of Reading, may take the name of Ellen Maria Kenny

that Loammi Kendall, jun., of Charlestown, may take the name of Arthur Kendall

that Samuel King, jun., of Cambridge, may take the name of Samuel Wilson King

that Fanny Tufts, of Medford, may take the name of Frances Emily Tufts

that William Searles, of Lowell, may take the name of William Coleman

that Alice Ann Fullerton, of Lowell, a minor, may take the name of Alice Ann Shattuck

that Edward Eels, jun., of Medford, may take the name of Edward Eels Nash; all of the county of Middlesex.

that Edmund Burpee, of Lowell, may take the name of Edmund Howes Kendall

that Henrietta Maria Sparhawk Burpee, wife of the said Edmund Burpee, and his minor son, Edmund Howes, may severally take the surname of Kendall

that Betsey Farnsworth, wife of William J. Farnsworth, of Charlestown, may take the name of Caroline Augusta Farnsworth

that Sarah Bradish Ayer, of Charlestown, a minor, may take the name of Sarah Eliza Ayer Jackson
