Peirce Family of Watertown

PEIRCE (Pierce, Pearce, Perce, Peers, Pers., etc.)
The orthography of the name of this family is much and often varied in the records. That
adopted here has been generally used; but many, especially of the later generations, have
adopted PIERCE which is probably the correct orthography.
1.
John Peirce, a weaver, of Watertown, adm. freeman March 1637/8. His Will, not naming his
children was dated March 4, 1667-8 and he died Aug. 19, 1661. His widow Elizabeth died Mar.
12, 1666/7. Her Will dated March 5, proved April 2, 1667, mentions son Anthony (sole executor),
son Robert (admitted freeman May 13, 1642), son John, dau. Esther Morse (wife of
the first Joseph Morse, of Watertown), dau Mary Coldam, grand dau's Mary & Esther Ball,
children of her dau. Elizabeth. [See Ball, 3.] It is probable that her son Robert settled
in Woburn. Perhaps her son John was the one admitted freeman 1652 and the one who, by wife
Elizabeth had John b. in Boston, June 16, 1643. It is however more probable that he was an
early settler of Wethersfield, Conn. Among the gleanings of Judge Savage, for New England
History (Mass. Hist. Coll., 4th series, Vol I., p. 96), is the following extract from an
ancient document lately found in the English Exchequer. "April the 8th, 1637. The examination
of John Pers of Norwch in Noff (Norwich in Norfolk) weaver aged 49 yeares and
Elizabeth his wife aged 36 yeares with four children: John, Barbre, Elizabeth & Judeth and
one sarvent John Gedney aged 19 yeares and desirous to passe to Boston in New England to
inhabitt." The name, age, occupation, and date of the embarkation of the father of this
family, favour the idea that he was the John Peirce, who settled in Watertown. If so, either
Elizabeth was his 2nd wife or there was a mistake in her age; and he must have come
to America some years after the arrival of his son Anthony.
