Everyone has heard of Athens, Greece. But did you know that in the United States alone, there are sixteen towns including MI named Athens, and all with post offices. They're located in the following states: AL, GA, IL, IN, KS, LA, ME, NY, OH, PA, TN, TX, VT, WV and WI.

Athens, MI is located in Athens Township on Highway M-66 in the extreme southwest corner of Calhoun County, adjacent to Battle Creek and Coldwater areas and has a population of 2,237.

Isaac Crossett was one of the seven first settlers in 1831. The Athens Post Office was established on February 15, 1837 with Ephraim Turner as its first postmaster. It discontinued operation on October 11, 1859 and reestablished on April 3, 1860 and has continued operation every since and uses zip code 49011.

William Simons built the first store in 1854. Athens, MI was named after Athens, NY., where many of the first settlers came from. In 1860 Athens was platted by A. C. Waterman and incorporated as a village in 1895.
