Michigan Trails through Chippewa County
Tracing descent through his mother's family from the Masons, of Mason-and-Dixon-line fame, William Oswald Mullian holds a responsible post in Burbank's commercial life as manager of the Southern California Gas Company's inerests there. He went to work for that company immediately he arrived in Los Angeles in 1922 and after various positions was promoted to assistant efficiency engineer. It is interesting to note that installation and accounting systems that were installed during his regime in that position are still in active use. He has had the managership of the Burbank office for a year and a half. William O. Mulligan was born in Chippewa County, Michigan, March 21, 1893, the son of Alexander and Nancy (Mills) Mulligan. His father was deputy collector of U.S. customs in Superior, Wisconsin. After attending the schools and business college in Superior the son worked for two years in the customs service. In 1916 he joined the Army for border patrol service at San Antonio. He later spent 2 1/2 years overseas, was gassed, and discharged in June, 1919, a first sergeant. After the War he worked six months for Firestone Rubber Company and then two years for the Building Mill Company o fMinneapolis, being superintendent of Transportation and Warehouse. Los Angeles was his next move.
Mr. Mulligan is fond of fishing, golf and all sports, and has played semi-professional football. Scouting is one of his present-day interests. He is on the Boy Scout Board of Control as District Chairman for the SOuthern district. Mrs. Mulligan was formerly Bertha C. Rude of Superior, Wisconsin, and was active in educational work in that state. Their marriage took place in 1922 at St. Paul MN. The couple have one son, William Rude Mulligan age 11. Merberships held by Mr. Mulligan are in the Episcopal Church, Burbank Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce, in both of which he is a director, the Masonic Lodge, American Legion and in the Pacific Coast Gas Assoc.
