Two small caskets bearing the ashes of his children, being lowered into the earth at Pine Grove cemetery and covered against the wintry winds of all ages to come, Victor Huhtala, the father, set out with quivering lip to make a new home for his injured wife and the nine small children who survive the holocaust which swept their farm residence near Brimley early Monday morning (16 December 1929). More than $700 in debt before the fire started, because of his efforts to feed, clothe and care for his family of 13 children and to wrest a living from his rented farm, Mr. Huhtala faces a long struggle to get back on even footing with the world. Determinedly however, he brushes back the tears that fall involuntarily in memory of his cremated son and daughter and lays his plans for the future.

An explosion of kerosene that brought death to Marie Beseau 9 at a wedding shower near Brimley Friday night claimed a second victim at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Mrs. Edward Drew, 25, hostess of the party and older sister of the Beseau girl. Herman Falkenhagen severely burned when he tried to save the life of Marie by beating out the flames was still in the War Memorial Hsp. His condition is "fairly good." When Mrs. Drew and Mrs. John Roup, followed by Marie went into the Drew kitchen to prepare a midnight luncheon, Mrs. Drew started a fire in the kitchen stove. When the stick of hardwood did not burn she picked up a can of kerosene and poured the liquid into the stove. Apparently the fire was not out and the oil exploded.
