Augustus Bertram Escape
Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa Co MI
August 6, 1892 - Sault Ste Marie News/Chippewa Genealogical Society

Augustus Bertram made a daring escape from Deputy Sheriff Darroch on Friday of last week, while on the way to Ionia to serve a sentence of two years at hard labor for adultry. Just as the boat Faxton was leaving Rain's dock at Neebish, the prisoner made a leap that would have done credit to an acrobat, landed on the edge of the dock, took to the woods, and made his escape.

The fugitive afterwards ran across a party of campers, frightened the ladies and made them give him a good dinner. He then compelled a number of young folks in the camp to row him across to Canada, where he no doubt now is.

Augustus bertram as convicted of adultry six or seven years ago and was sentenced by Judge Steere to two years at hard labor at Ionia. Through the assistance of outside friends he broke out of county jail. He made himself scarce for awhile, but for the past four years had been living at Bay Mills.

Lately he started a little store there, got into trouble with his neighbors, and finally his enemies got the officiers after him with the result that he was arrested Thursday of last week by Deputy Darroch, who brought him to the Soo and started to Ionia next day with the result stated.

Bertrams partner in the crime is now marired and living here. The escaped prisoner is still at large. Deputy Darroch is in no wise ot blame for the escape.
