Contributed by Mary Kowatch My great, great grandfather was the first Reeve of Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. His name was Andrew C. McKay, his wife’s name was Mary Jane Walt, daughter of David Walt (WI area) and Sarah Steele from Penn area I believe.
Andrew McKay came over with his parents from Scotland by way of Liverpool , England to the US in 1855 on the ship “Andrew Foster”. All the Mckay siblings and parents are listed.
There is younger brother, Hector Mckay, that was born in 1852 in Scotland and married Pheobe Hoover on Oct. 27, 1880 by the Rev. T.R. Easterday.
My great, great grandfather was listed as a witness as well as a sister or daughter, Sarah Mckay. Andrew had both a sister Sarah as well as a daughter Sarah. The daughter was born in 1865 I believe. The Andrew McKay family is listed in the Algoma census of 1871 with Andrew’s father, William McKay. I don’t know where this William is buried or what happened to his wife, Jane Gray.
Mary Jane McKay died in 1899 of thyphoid fever, then Andrew moved out west to Washington with 3 of his children and their spouses. My great grandmother, Margaret married Amiel Anderson and stayed in the UP of Michigan , mainly Kingsford and Manistique, MI.
I’m not exactly sure when they came from Sault Canada to Sault, Michigan . They are in the Sault, Chippewa, MI census of 1880.
