MICHIGAN COLLEGE of MINING & TECHNOLOGY

Fort Brady to School -
Michigan Tech Extension Courses Open In The Fall
(The Herald Press - St. Joseph Michigan 28 February 1946)

From arts of war to arts of peace, Fort Brady, one of Uncle Sam's oldest military establishments, will become an educational institution about Sept. 20, 1946. By action of the state legislature and subject still to transfer of the post reservation to the state, the military barracks will become classrooms in time for the fall term of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology at Houghton.

The legislature appropriated $107,000 for converting Fort Brady; $25,000 for operation this year if it can be put in order for the summer term, and $138,000 for operation during the next fiscal year. The college here, to be known as a branch of Michigan Tech, will offer a full freshman course including ROTC training.

The post, founded here more than a hundred years ago, has been declared surplus by the army and transferred to the federal works agency of public building administration at Detroit. Final disposition is in the hands of E.J. McBratney of Detroit.

During the war Ft. Brady was the focal point of a garrison of men totaling 12,000 stationed here to protect the locks and lake commerce. New concepts in national defense now make the installation unnecessary, the army declares.

President Grover C. Dillman of Michigan Tech said it is planned to offer first year courses in all eight branches of the engineering college - chemical, civil, electrical, geological, mechanical, metallurgical, engineering physics, metal dressing and mining.

Twenty subjects will be offered including first year physical training. Student health service, guidance and counseling will be instituted along the lines followed at Houghton. Dr. Dillman, taking charge of the Michigan Tech branch along with Prof. F.L. Partio, extension director, said addition of the Fort Brady program would not affect first year work at Houghton.

The 30 member Sault staff will also include an assistant treasurer, assistant registrar, superintendent of building, ground and maintenance, dormitory director, chairmen of the various departments and instructions.

Some 300 students, most of them veterans are expected to enroll.
