George H. Jeruzal
Kewadin-George H. Jeruzal, age 87, of Kewadin, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Munson Medical Center. He was born July 7, 1921, in Detroit to Walter Frank and Josephine Mary (Rominski) Jeruzal.
George served during World War II as a sergeant at Fort McClellan, Alabama. In 1943, he married Lorna Marie Forrest. Following her death, he married Shirley Mary Jeruzal in 1953 and Ethel Williamson in 1970.
George had a long career in the lumber and building trades.
In 1979, he and his wife Ethel began work on their home on the east arm of Grand Traverse Bay, and retired there in 1981. In the years following, George continue to build and remodel homes in the East Bay area and served on the torch Lake Township board.
George had a lifelong passion of cooking for family and friends. During the summer and fall he spent hours in his canning kitchen, transforming local fruits such as cherries, peaches, apples, strawberries and, raspberries into quote jewels in a jar”, a labor of love he generously gave away to family, neighbors and friends.
He enjoyed collecting and restoring old furniture, lamps and antique clocks. He was an avid gardener and a bird lover.
He served as a nonmedical, community volunteer on the Munson home health advisory board from 1996 until his death. He was a member of Munson’s hospice house advisory board. In 2005, George and his family published the goodbye George cookbook to benefit Munson hospice house. The book of his recipes had raised well over $30,000 since its publication. When George’s health failed, Boy Scout student Worthington, of Traverse City, made it his community project to promote and sell the cookbook.
George was honored as the September 2008 community hero by seven and for news and was recognized in local newspapers in by nine and 10 news for his work with hospice.
He is survived by his children, Kathleen Ann (Ken) Siler of Manchester, Nancy Carol (Jim Turner) Jeruzal of Couer D Alene, Idaho, Margaret Ann (Michael) Turner of Gregory, Mary Helen Jeruzal of Hollister, Missouri, George Anthony (Janice) Jeruzal of Dearborn, Martin Linus and Prince C Pamela) Jeruzal of Whitmore Lake, Joseph Jeruzal of Burnsville, Minnesota, and Frank (Andrea) Jeruzal of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Tom (Dolores) Jeruzal of Dearborn.
In addition to his parents, George is seated in death by his brother, Ted Jeruzal; his wife’s, Lorna, Shirley and Ethel; two daughters Diane Marie Krcek and Lorna Marie Zimmer; and three grandsons, Michael Turner, Joseph Krcek and Nathan Krcek.
The family will welcome friends from 5 to 8 PM Monday, March 16, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids, with a visual for the deceased at 7 PM. A mass from the order of Christian funerals will be celebrated at 11 AM Tuesday, March 17, 2009, with the Rev. Robert J Zuchowski presiding.
George would appreciate being remembered through memorial contributions to Munson hospice house, care of Munson healthcare regional foundation, 210 Beaumont Pl., Traverse City, MI 49684.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell funeral home of Elk Rapids.
