County History

Founded: 1851


County Seat: Traverse City.

Grand Traverse County was orignially called Omeena County and seperated in 1840.  Legislature in 1851 Renamed and founded Grand Traverse County.   The first settlement was a mission, now called Old Mission, located on the peninsula between the two bays, East and West Grand Traverse Bays.  Grand Traverse comes from a french phrase meaning "Long crossing" because of they way it is situated between the two bays. Grand Traverse County is home of the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, and Northwestern Michigan College and the Great Lakes Maritime Academy.
