First of all I would like to thank Jim Kurtti and his family members for supplying me with the many photos and history of this area.
Beacon Hill, MI is located in Houghton County, Stanton Township. This settlement was the center of the Trimountain Mining Company with W. J. Uren as superintendent. Beacon Hill was named after the Beacon Hill of Boston, largely financed by Boston capital, which built the Copper Range Mines - including Beacon Hill, etc.
Beacon Hill, like Freda and Redridge, were stamp mills for the Champion Mines in Painesdale, Trimountain, etc. The mill in Beacon Hill was the Trimountain Mill.
Beacon Hill had a railroad depot on the Copper Range Railroad route. The railroad depot is long gone, along with the company store and post office, which burned in the early 1950s. For the history of the Copper Range Railroad visit their website at http://copperrange.org/Crrr.htm#crcc
The Beacon Hill Post Office was established on December 11, 1901 with Nathaniel West as its first postmaster.
Postmasters that served at the Beacon Hill, MI Post Office are listed as follows:
(It is noted that August 31, 1952 was a Sunday), so postmarks with the August 30, 1952 is the official last day postmark).
The Beacon Hill Post Office discontinued operation on August 31, 1952; with mail service to Freda.
