HISTORY OF THE MUIR, MI POST OFFICE
by Paul E. Petosky

This village located in Ionia County, Lyons Township began in 1854 with the lumber mill of Soule, Robinson & Company (Ambrose L. Soule, Andrew Byron Robinson, and Rev. Isaac Errett).

Originally established as Montrose Station on September 12, 1857 with Andrew B. Robinson as its first postmaster. It was named Montrose Station because of the many early settlers came from Montrose, NY. Railroad superintendent, H. K. Muir, was instrumental in getting the Detroit, Muskegon & Western (now Grand Trunk) Railroad to come through Muir. Name was changed to Muir on February 15, 1859 with George M. French as postmaster.
