TREMAYNE, Henry
The death of Dr. Henry Tremayne, at his home in this city, at 3 o'clock on Monday afternoon, June 3, brings sadness to many homes in Ionia county in which he had been the trusted medical adviser for many years. Dr. Tremayne was born in the county of Leeds, Canada, August 16, 1839. He was the son of Rev. Francis and Elizabeth Tremayne, natives of England, who early came to New York state, and later settled in Canada. The father was an active minister in the Episcopal church for many years. Henry Tremayne's early industrial experience was as a farm boy, but later he served as clerk in a general store in Canada. His ambition, however, was neither in the line of farming or mercantile pursuits, and he entered the medical department of the University at Toronto, from which he graduated in 1865. Immediately afterward, he came to Ionia county, locating at what is known as Tremayne's Corners, named for him. Later he spent two years at Portland. He came to Ionia in 1876, where his home remained until his death. He was married in June, 1862, to Miss Jane Johnson, and their marriage has been blessed by two children: Emma, the wife of Amos M. Welch, and Harry H., a traveling salesman who makes his home in Grand Rapids. The demands of his profession required his time and energies to a degree that prevented large participation in public affairs, and he met the high degree of professional success which his devotion to his calling merited. He was a Democrat in his political faith, and served the city faithfully as health officer for many years. He was a member of the Knights of the Maccabees and the Masonic orders. He was also a member of the Episcopal church. He was of robust constitution, but the hardships of a general practice covering a considerable section of country, made visible inroads on his constitutional vigor, and caused him to limit his outside practice in more recent years. Nothing alarming developed in his condition until within the past year, and his decline in that time has been steady, and at the last rapid. The doctor was of a genial social temperament, steadfast in his principles, honorable in his business methods, and trustworthy in all the relations of life. In short, he was a good citizen, who will be sincerely mourned by many old-time friends in the city and outside. The funeral services will be held at St. John's Episcopal church, on Thursday morning at 10 o'clock.

TREMAYNE, Jane
Ionia lost one of its older residents Tuesday evening in the passing of Mrs. Jane Tremayne, 87, of 527 West Main street. Death came quietly at her home after an illness of several weeks following a stroke. The funeral services will be conducted from the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 by Rev. Edwin G. White. Interment will be made in the Highland Park cemetery. Mrs. Tremayne was the widow of the late Dr. Henry Tremayne, who came to Ionia many years ago and established a practice at Tremayne's corners, south of Ionia, which still bears his name. She was born in Longtown, county Leeds, Ont., and came to Ionia county with her husband when he took up the practice of his profession in this vicinity. Early in life she affiliated with St. John's Episcopal church and was known to be kindly and devout, and throughout her life symbolized the Christianity which constituted her faith and made her life one of gracious affection. Surviving is the daughter, Mrs. A. M. Welch; a son, Henry M. Tremayne, of Grand Rapids, who is spending the winter in California and will not be able to come to Michigan for the funeral services because of his sickness; three grandsons, Henry, John and Palmer Welch; two grandsons, Douglas Welch and Amos Welch, and two granddaughters, Emma Jane Welch and Jane Caroline Welch."

Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock Rev. Edwin G. White conducted the Episcopal burial service for Mrs. Jane Tremayne who died Tuesday evening. The services were held at the home on West Main street, and the interment followed in the Highland Park cemetery. There were but few old persons present for the services, for this widow of the pioneer physician had outlived the associates of her youth, and the most of those of her middle age, but there were many there of the younger generation who learned to love her through the contacts of her later life. Grandsons, Henry, John, and Palmer Welch, and great-grandson, Amos Welch, Jr. acted as bearers. Miss Evelyn Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Welch were those here from out of town to attend."

WELCH, Amos Morgan
Amos Morgan Welch, age 96, of Saranac, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2005 in Ionia. He was born January 19, 1909 in Ionia, the son of John and Leah (Rogers) Welch. Amos married Wilma Patrick who preceded him in death September 28, 1994. He was a member of First Christian Church of Ionia and MMPA for many years. He was on the board for Ronald Grange Twp. for over 20 years. He is survived by his daughter Janet (Phil) Jones of Saranac; grandchildren, Lee (Karen) Jones of Saranac, Karl (Sarah) Jones of Saranac; great-grandchildren Melissa, Kathryn, Crystal, Lance, Kyle and Kent. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday at Easton United Methodist Church with Chaplain Tom Reaume officiating. Interment will be in Saranac Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac. You may make memorial contributions in Amos's name to American Cancer Fund or Easton United Methodist Church.

WELCH, Emma Jane (Crossman)
Emma Jane Crossman, 70, of 2748 Welch Road, Ionia, died Tuesday evening in Ionia County Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 10, 1915, in Onaway, Mich., she was the daughter of Henry T. and Blanche Reynolds Welch. She graduated from Ionia High School with the Class of 1935 and attended Western Michigan University, from which she was graduated with a bachelor of arts in education. She taught in the Belding public schools. She also served as Ionia Township treasurer and as a board member of the Ionia County Chapter, American Red Cross. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She was married to D. Sheldon Crossman on Dec. 2, 1939, at the family residence in Ionia. They had made their home on the Welch family farm for the past 40 years. Surviving are her husband, a daughter, Mary Jo Crossman of Ionia; a brother, Douglas R. Welch of Ionia; cousins, nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. No services will be held. A memorial has been established for the Ionia County Unit, American Cancer Society, in care of Hull Memorial Chapel, Muir, which made arrangements.

WELCH, Emma (Tremayne)
Mrs. Emma T. Welch, 90, of 230 East Washington street, died early Tuesday morning (11 May 1954) at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for the past two weeks. She was born at Milton, Ontario, September 20, 1863, the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Tremayne. She came, with her family, to Ionia in 1865 and they settled at what is now known as Tremaynes Corners. They later moved to Ionia where she attended schools her and in 1881 was married to A.M. Welch who preceded her in death in 1941. They lived the early part of their married life on the old Welch homestead and moved to Ionia city in 1910. She was a life member of St. John's Episcopal church and an active member of the guild. Surviving are three sons, John B. Of Ronald township, and Henry T. on the Welch farm and A. Palmer of Ionia city; four grandchildren Amos Jr., Douglas Welch, Emma Jane Crossman all of the Ionia area and Mrs. Jane Beach of Dallas, Texas. Six great-grandchildren, Janet Welch, Marcia and Irma Sue Welch, Mary Jo Crossman, Tracy, Lynn and Catherine Jane Beach also survive. The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 o'clock. Mrs. Welch reposes at Boynton funeral home and funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at St. John's Episcopal church with Rev. Fr. Roger J. Bunday officiating. Interment will be at the Highland Park cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Emma T. Welch of 230 East Washington street, who died early Tuesday morning, were held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at St. John's Episcopal church. The Rev. Fr. Roger J. Bunday officiating. Interment was at the Highland Park cemetery. Bearers were Fred B. Post, Marshall Westfall, Robert Clore, Kenneth Wheaton, A.M. Burnett and O.M. Jones. Out-of-town relatives who attended the services were Mrs. Marcus W. Beach, of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Don McDowell and Mrs. Dorothy Tyler of Kalamazoo, and Mr. and Mrs. Druce Tremayne of Grand Rapids.

WELCH, Henry Tremayne
Henry Tremayne Welch, 83, vice president of First Security bank and well known Ionia county farmer and a descendent of a pioneer Ionia family died Tuesday evening at 10 o'clock at his home, 205 East Washington, Ionia. Mr. Welch had been ill several weeks and was returned to his home from Ionia County Memorial hospital only a few weeks after being a patient there for about a month. His condition became critical during the past weekend. In the past several years following his retirement as secretary and treasurer of Ionia Federal Land Bank association, Mr. Welch had taken part in activities of First Security bank. He owned and operated for many years the H.T. Welch farm in Ionia township, a pioneer landmark which is located only a few miles northeast of Ionia along Prairie creek. A lifelong Democrat he had served his township as supervisor for many years and was a past township treasurer, a position his daughter, Mrs. Sheldon Crossman, now holds. Mr. Welch's son, Douglas, is an Ionia attorney and former Ionia city mayor and president of the school board. Mr. Welch was born April 17, 1886 in Ionia township, the son of Amos Morgan Welch and Emma Tremayne Welch. Both parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his widow, Blanche Reynolds Welch, two children; Mrs. Sheldon Crossman and Douglas R. Welch, both of Ionia and three grandchildren. A brother A. Palmer Welch of Ionia also survives. Mr. Welch was, throughout his life, connected with agriculture and agricultural financing. Shortly after his marriage in 1912 to Blanche Reynolds he was employed by the late T.B. Preston from 1914-1915 in the management and eventual liquidation of cut-over timber lands at Onaway. This work was completed in 1916 when he returned to the Welch farm in Ionia township. He operated this farm until 1948. The farm is now owned and operated by his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. And Mrs. Sheldon Crossman. He served Ionia township as treasurer for several years and was also its supervisor from 1928 to 1936. Mr. Welch attended Ionia public schools, Ferris Institute and Michigan Agricultural college. In 1909 until 1914 he managed the family ranching interests of 5000 acres from headquarters at Hale. He was employed in 1914 to closing out the ranching interests of Governor Chandler estate at Onaway. He served as director of Seventh district Farm Credit Board at St. Paul, Minn., from 1940 until 1956 and was president of that board from 1947 until 1956 when he retired at age 70. In 1928 he was elected secretary treasurer of the Ionia County National Farm Loan association. He participated in the reorganization of this association under the National Farm Credit Acts of 1933 and in the year 1933 opened the office of the association in the City of Ionia. In 1941 he was elected at member of the board of directors of The Seventh Farm Credit District at St. Paul, Minnesota. He was a chairman of this board from 1949 to 1956. In 1941 he was also elected a member of the Board of directors of First Security bank, and was later elected to vice-president of that institution. He retired from the Farm Credit System in 1956. His connection with First Security bank continued until his death. He was a member of the Ionia Elks Lodge from 1908 until his death. He had been a member of numerous other fraternal organizations, including the St. Paul Athletic club at St. Paul, Minnesota. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Boynton-Leddick funeral home on Rich street. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery. A memorial will be established for him at St. John's Episcopal church in Ionia.

Rev. Fr. Charles Lynch officiated at funeral services Saturday afternoon in Ionia for Henry T. Welch, who died Tuesday. Entombment was at Highland Park mausoleum. Officers and employees of First Security bank attended in a group. Honorary bearers were Loren Adgate, Donald Cernell, Victor Harrison, Michael Cahoon, Lester Dunn and Irving Krebs.

John B. Welch, 82, Ronald township farmer, sheep dog breeder and veteran Ionia county supervisor, died at 11:55 p.m. Tuesday at Ionia County Memorial hospital where he had been a patient three weeks. He lapsed into a coma during the weekend. A native of Longton, Kansas, he was the son of Amos M. and Emma Welch, moving to Ionia when he was less than one year old. The family moved to Michigan and lived in Ionia township until 1915 when they purchases the present farm in Ronald township. Mr. Welch, a staunch Democrat in a hard core Republican township, served his township in several capacities including its supervisor for 30 years. He often remarked that as the "Jim Farley" of Ronald township he was equally popular with Republicans and Democrats. He had served with distinction on the board of supervisors and had been its chairman. He retired in 1963 after 30 years as township supervisor. On November 24, 1907 he was married to Leah Rogers in Grand Rapids, who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Welch had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1957. Mrs. Welch has likewise been ill for several years and is presently living at the Ionia Manor. Mr. Welch served for nearly half a century as superintendent of the sheep department of Ionia free far. He had been a breeder of sheep for many years and later raised sheep dogs which he trained. He appeared at numerous fairs with his trained sheep dogs, giving exhibitions of their ability. He had appeared at the Ionia free fair on numerous occasions with his dogs. Mr. Welch served as one of the original directors of Ionia County Soil Conservation commission for more than 14 years. He belonged to the Ronald Grange and Ionia county Farm Bureau and was a life member of Ionia Elks and Palo Lodge F. & AM. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Ionia. Surviving are his wife, Leah; a son, Amos M. Welch with whom Mr. Welch had operated the large Ronald township farm, a granddaughter, three great- grandchildren; two brothers, Henry T. and A. Palmer Welch, both of Ionia. Funeral services will be at the First Christian church at 2 p.m. Friday. The body will remain at the Stone-Kauffman funeral home until noon Friday. Interment will be at Highland Park cemetery in Ionia township. A memorial is being established for Mr. Welch.
