Commissioned Major Oct. 28 1861. Commissioned Lieutenant Colonel July 25 1862. Mustered Jan. 25 1863. Commissioned Colonel Jan. 1 1863. Mustered Jan. 1 1863. Wounded in action at Chancellorsville Va. May 3 1863. Wounded in action at Gettysburg Pa. July 2 1863. Wounded in action at Spottsylvania Va. May 12 1864. Wounded in action at Petersburg Va. June 18 1864. Brigadier General Volunteers June 7 1864. Brevet Major General U.S. Volunteers April 6 1865 for gallant services at Sailor's Creek Va. Mustered out Aug. 24 1865. Present residence Grand Rapids Mich. A soldier, born in East Bloomfield, Ontario County, New York, 20 September, 1829. He received au academical education at Rochester, New York, and, removing to Michigan, early became interested in military matters. At the beginning of the civil war he enlisted in the 3d Michigan volunteers, and was commissioned successively captain, major, lieutenant-colonel, and colonel of that regiment, which served throughout the war with the Army of the Potomac. He was made brigadier-general of volunteers, 7 June, 1864, brevetted major-general, 6 April, 1865, and mustered out of the service on 24 August At present (1888) he is commandant of the Soldiers' home at Grand Rapids, Michigan
