Lucas was founded in 1878 by William Taylor. In 1882, a number of Dutch settlers, including Harm Lucas and his five sons arrived here. Lucas was named after Harm Lucas.
The Lucas, MI Post Office was established on February 23, 1883 with Abraham Lucas as its first postmaster.
The Lucas Post Office discontinued operation on February 16, 1885 and was reestablished on September 7, 1885 with Peter Van den Bosch as postmaster. The post office discontinued operation on June 30, 1957 and became a rural branch of McBain until 1972.
