Elmwood Cemetery 1200 Elmwood Detroit, Wayne County MI     Photos by Earl Richard Sutton Purchased in 1846 by subscription of 41 acres. By May 1871, Elmwood covered 78 acres of enclosed grounds and 3-1/3 acres outside of the enclosure. A chapel was built in 1855 and the stone gateway on Elmwood Street was completed in 1870. The total number of interments by late 1884 was 21,421; 55 lots were left unsold at that time.
