Roman Catholic Church
The first services of the Roman Catholic Church were held at the house of Anthony Kaisor. by the
Rev. Father Gilhe. in June. t868, about twenty persons being present. Until 1S75 the society was
attached to the church at Dearborn, but during that year it was transferred to the Monroe church,
under the pastorate of Rev. B. G. Suffers, in whose charge it remained until May, 188;. when it was
placed in the charge of Father Stephens and others from the St. Bona venture's Monastery of the Capuchin Order in Detroit. In October, 1888. Rev. John
Lovctt was installed as the first regular rector, and the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was then
fully established as an independent parish. The church lot cost $200. and the building $1,700. It
will seat 250. It was completed so as to be used (or the first time on November 26. 1875. but was not consecrated until September 14. 1884.
