HISTORY OF THE WAYNE, MI POST OFFICE

The site what is now known as Wayne was first settled by George M. Johnson in 1824, who built a log house for the entertainment of travelers. The village was plotted as Derby's Corners by Ezra Derby in 1835 from its location in Nankin Township. The post office was originally established as South Nankin on April 22, 1835 with William D. Wescott as its first postmaster. Name changed to Wayne on December 11, 1851 with John J. Wright as postmaster during the name changeover.
Wayne became a village in 1869 and a city in 1960.
