The Indians

In corroboration of what we published last week respecting the hostile disposition of the Indians; it is mentioned in the Cincinnati paper of the 34th of August, that it was reported that the Indians intended to make an attack on Detroit . Several families have removed in from the frontier settlements. The people generally in Champaign and Miami counties, are much alarmed, owing to the hostile disposition they have evinced towards them by their actions and dress. The Prophet at Greenville , is using his influence to withdraw their confidence from our government.
We have been informed, since receiving the above, that the inhabitants of the most frontier settlements, are erecting block houses for their security that it is generally believed they are preparing for war, and that they are urged on by the British.

A letter from a gentleman of respectability in Lewiston , on the Niagara river , to his brother in this town, dated the 10th August, contains the following intelligence.
That capt. Connelly, of the schooner Wilkinson, arrived there from Detroit, who informs, that when he left there the town was in a state of the utmost alarm in consequence of the hostile conduct of the Indians about 500 whom had encamped on Detroit river, opposite the town, dressed and painted in a manner that indicated war that a few of them had attacked a white family, and wounded the man, but on the alarm being given they were dispersed that the inhabitants of Detroit were engaged in fortifying the town, and had already enclosed it with picquets and erected a block house in the centre. In addition to this the latter states, that an express arrived at Chipawa, on the 19th, with information that the Indians had killed several families; and that in consequence of this news a person of influence with the Indians was dispatched from Chipawa to Detroit. The inhabitants of Canada were as greatly alarmed as those of the United States . The object of the Indians was supposed to be plunder. Canandaigua Repository.

The aboriginal inhabitants of the United States are opening their eyes to their true interests; a great number of whom, representatives of thirteen nations (all all about 2,000) lately kindled a council fire near Detroit , to take into consideration the present state of their affairs. Red Jacket spoke almost a whole day. He advised the Indians to peace, to attend to agriculture, and change their manner of life with their circumstances. He forcibly portrayed the different policy of France and Great Britain, and the United States the former had always desired to make them parties in their wars wars in which they had no interest; the latter advised them, at every event, to remain at home in peace, attending to their own wives and children. The Grand Council sent a speech, urging nearly the same things to the nations they represented, and strictly cautioning them to be peaceable towards the people of the United States . A speech was also sent to the Prophet, and our younger brethren the Shawanese, commanding them to be quiet and attend to their domestic concerns, ordering they shall not kindle a council fire except for their own tribe, being the youngest of the nations.
