1878 Business Directory and Gazetteer
In the northeastern part of Beltrami county, on the eastern shore of Red Lake, and within the Red Lake and Pembine Indian Reserve.
Or Red Lake Agency, in the northwestern part of Beltrami county, about 325 miles from St. Paul by the traveled route. Shipments are made via Detroit City, Becker county, Minn., a station on the N. P. R. R., about 80 miles distant. Petro creek, at this point, affords power for driving a government saw and grist mill. A manual labor boarding and day school is a feature of the place. Exports consist of furs and seneca root. Population given as 1,175, principally Chippewa Indians. Mail, weekly. L. A. Pratt, postmaster.
