E. P. Birge,
Saint Paul, Minn., A NEW STEAM BOILER. Designed by E. P. Birge, Superintendent of the Police Patrol Alarm System. A patent has been issued to E. P. Birge, superintendent of the police patrol alarm system, for a new and improved upright boiler, designed more particularly for fire engines. The inventions on which the patent was granted consists principally of pipes, or water passages arranged in the fire box and connected with the boiler in such a manner that there will be a constant circulation of water through the pipes to and from the boiler, causing a rapid generation of steam. A pump is also combined with the boiler, arranged to take water from the lower part of the water space and elevate it to the top of the boiler, so that cold water in the boiler at the time of starting the fires may be artificially circulated by opening the pump. The boiler above its tubes is provided with a pipe terminating within the water space and connected with the feed water supply pipe, so that feed water will be heated before entering the water space of the boiler. The practical results of the use of the patent will be to rapidly generate steam and utilize fuel to the best advantage. The Saint Paul Globe (MN) 12/26/1886

C. F. Willis,
Fergus Falls, Minn., A Fergus Falls Citizen Patents an Improvement to a Telephone. Mr. C. F. Willis, a well known electrician of this city, has invented what he calls the Automatic Telephone Call to control the call mechanism of telephones where there are more than one instrument on the same line. Five or more telephones can be placed on the same line and the central office can call any of them without disturbing any of the others. The device is contained in a box 5x8.5 inches in size, and is fastened to the wall beside and attached to the telephone by wires, and requires no changes made either in the telephone or at the central office. It is entirely automatic and when once adjusted requires no further attention. Star Tribune (MN) 11/14/1886
