The county was named for General John Pope who had traveled through the area in 1849 as part of an exploration expedition.
Pope County was created 20 Feb 1862. Until it was organized on 4 Sep 1866, it was attached to Stearns County. This means that during the time period between creation and organization, records pertaining to Pope County should be found in the records of Stearns County.
The county seat was originally Stockholm, but has been Glenwood since the first election, in 1866.
The population of Pope County is about 11,000 people with a strong Scandinavian heritage.
