Name of Deceased: STELLA "EUGENIA" HOWELL BREWTON

Newspaper: Hattiesburg American -- November 22, 2011

Submitters Name: Betty R Marshall

Obit: Stella "Eugenia" Howell Brewton died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, November 19, 2011, in Sugar Land, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on November 22, at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home, Rosenberg, TX. There will be a visitation at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg, MS, from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, November 26, followed by a graveside service at Highland Cemetery, with Dr. Jon Stubblefield officiating. Mrs. Brewton will be buried next to her beloved husband, Cyrus J. Brewton.
Mrs. Brewton was born on July 7, 1931, in George County, Mississippi, the eighth and youngest child of Lee and Stella Howell. She graduated high school in Lucedale, Mississippi, earned a bachelor's degree from State Teacher's College, and later a master's degree in education from USM. She married her husband, Cyrus, in 1955, and they lived together in great love and affection for nearly 50 years in Hattiesburg until his death in 2004.
Mrs. Brewton was a long time elementary school teacher in the Hattiesburg Public School system beginning in the 1950s. She took great pride in having taught so many successful residents of Hattiesburg over the decades, and later their children as well, at Jeff Davis, Camp, Grace Christian, and Thames Elementary Schools. She took time off for family in the 1960s and returned to teaching in the 1970s when she helped establish the REACH program in the Hattiesburg public schools for gifted and talented children. Following a brief retirement she returned to teaching part-time both in the public schools and at USM and William Carey College as an adjunct instructor. Mrs. Brewton was devoted to her teaching, her colleagues, her students, and her work. She gave up teaching after fifty years in 2003 only when her husband fell ill. She greatly valued her former students and their children.
Mrs. Brewton was passionate about her church, her friends, and her family. For most of her married life she was an active and diligent member of Main Street Baptist Church, faithfully attending Sunday services and all church sponsored events for as long as she was able.
Mrs. Brewton had many warm friendships and loved talking with her friends about their own families, sharing their joys and their sorrows as if they were her own. She loved to laugh, and loved those who laughed with her. She was generous with friends and strangers alike, wherever she saw a need.
Mrs. Brewton and her husband had three children: Donna Holt (Kenn) of Sugar Land, TX, Vincent Brewton (Callie) of Florence, AL, and Lori Burleson (Bobby) of Norman, OK. No parents ever gave more or sacrificed more, or more willingly, than Cyrus and Eugenia. Their children were the center of their lives, and nothing was more important than family meals together. Mrs. Brewton had grown up on a farm and was an excellent cook. Cooking was a favorite pastime and one of the ways she shared her talents with the world, carrying countless dishes to sick, to shut-ins, to bereaved friends, and to church socials. Mrs. Brewton and her husband drove their children to every music lesson, sports practice, and school event for many years. They denied themselves at every turn to provide financially for their children and their grandchildren. They will always be remembered by their children for their unconditional love.
Mrs. Brewton's eight grandchildren-Charles, Jared, Forrest, Sarah Ann, Stuart, Merrie Margaret, Alec, and Patrick-were the joy of her life in later years. She cherished their presence and never forgot a birthday.
.
Mrs. Brewton is survived by her children, grandchildren, two brothers-Houston and Travis-and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She lived a full life and gave herself completely to her work, her church, her friends, and her family. She will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Main Street Baptist Church Benevolent Fund or the Hattiesburg Public Library.
