DECLARATION FOR ORIGINAL PENSION OF A WIDOW-CHILD OR CHILDREN UNDER SIXTEEN YEARS OF AGE SURVIVING
State of Mississippi, County of Jones
On this fourth day of November, 1878, personally appeared before me, Deputy Clerk of the Chancery Court, a court of record within and for the County and State aforesaid, Tabitha J. Walters, aged 34 years, a resident of Jones Co., Miss., who being duly sworn according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension provided by Acts of Congress granting pensions to widows, to wit: that she is the widow of Joel W. Walters who volunteered as a Private in Co. D, 1st Regt., New Orleans Inft. Vols. Commanded by ----- of war of 1861-5 who died after his leaving the service of consumption contracted in service on the 28th day of July A.D. 1868 at his residence in Jones Co., Miss.; who bore at the time of his death the rank of Private in Co. D. 1st Regt. of N.O. Vol.
That she was married under the name of Tabitha J. Welch to said Joel W. Walters on the 26th day of Sept., A.D. 1860 by A.J. Smith, Notary Public at Jones Co., Miss, there being no legal barrier to such marriage; that neither she nor her husband had been previously married (husband divorced from former wife Sept. 18th, 1860); that she has to the present date remained his widow; that the following are the names and dates of birth of all his legitimate children yet surviving who were under sixteen years of age at the father’s death, to wit: His by a former marriage-Eleanor Walters, deceased, 1855. Mary C. Aug 4, 1860, Joe A. Mar. 6th, 1866, Mary E. Mar 6th, 1866. She has never applied for, or received a pension. She hereby appoints, with full power of substitution, and revocation, George E. Lemon of Washington, D.C. her true and lawful attorney, to prosecute her claim. That her post office address is Ellisville, Jones Co., Miss.

On this 4th day of May A.D. 1928, before me, the undersigned, personally appeared Mary E. Gough, aged 62 years, a resident of Laurel R.R. 7, County of Jones, State of Mississippi, who makes the following declaration as an application for, and claim is hereby made for nursing expenses paid in the last sickness of Tabitha J. Walters who was a pensioner of the United States who died Nov. 23, 1924 at Laurel R.R. 1, Mississippi and was buried at
Antioch Cemetery, Laurel R.R. 1. Unpaid: $2700.80
