G. A. Valentine Taken by Death Thursday Eve
G. A. Valentine, pioneer citizen and head of one of Jones county’s most respected and prominent families, died at the age of 84 years in his home Thursday.
Death occurred at 6 o’clock in the afternoon in the home near Soso which Mr. Valentine built over 60 years ago, and here he reared his family and won the love and sincere admiration of neighbors and countless friends and acquaintances.
Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock today at the Union Line church, with members of the Masonic lodge in charge. The Rev. J. W. Fagan of the Second Avenue Baptist church, Laurel, officiated. Internment was in the churchyard cemetery.
Mr. Valentine was born near the Union Line church on May 21, 1853, and was one of the prominent and successful farmers of the community during all the years of his life, which were spent in devotion for his family, his church and friends, earning for him a reputation unsurpassed for honesty, courage and high idealism. Mr. Valentine was a member of the Methodist church and the Masonic order.
Members of his family surviving are two sons, Sid Valentine of Laurel and Bura Ventine, official ay Parchmen; one brother, Millard of Gitano: 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Sidney A. Valentine, 68, Dies in Cape Girardeau
Sidney A. Valentine, 68 years old, a retired rural route carrier, died at 11:05 o’clock Thursday night at the family home, 805 North Boulevard, Mr. Valentine has been in failing health for the past 11 years following a first stroke of paralysis. He had suffered several since.
The body was sent today to the Charles A. Thompson Funeral Home at Laurel, Miss., from the Haman Funeral Home Home, where it will remain until services at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church. Interment will be in a cemetery there.
Mr. Valentine is survived by his wife Mrs. Della Valentine; two sons, Noel Valentine of Laurel, and Jack Valentine of Hattiesburg, Miss., a daughter, Mrs. Dee Hinton of Laurel; three step-children, Norman Day of Memphis, Tenn., Lynn Day and Mrs. R. C. Garner, both of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Berry Valentine of Soso, Miss., five grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren.
He was born Sept. 2, 1879, near Soso. He was first married to Bertha Quinbley, who passed away November 13, 1937. To this union three children were born. He was then married to Mrs. Della Day, who survives. Mr. Valentine for 30 years was rural mail carrier at Laurel. He moved to Cape Guirardeau in 1940 from Mississippi. He was a member of the Masonic lodge.

Mrs. S. A. Valentine Succumbs After Long Illness; Funeral Service on Saturday Evening
Mrs. S. A. Valentine, 52, wife of Sid Valentine, rural mail carrier, and resident of 1040 Second Avenue, died at the family residence at 4:00 o’clock Friday afternoon following an illness which confined her to her bed for the past six months.
Funeral services were held at the home at 3:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon with the Rev. J. F. Campbell, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Hickory Grove cemetery.
Born in Clarke County and reared in Jones, Mrs. Valentine had been a resident of Laurel for the past 20 years.
In addition to her membership in the First Methodist church and the Methodist Women’s Auxiliary, she was vice president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of Rural Letter Carriers of Mississippi.
She leaves, besides her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Thelma Hinton, Laurel; two sons, Noel Valentine and Jack Valentine, both of Laurel; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Quimby; and four brothers and sisters, J. O. Quimby, Mobile; Mrs. J. A. Hull, Mrs. B. L. Grafton, and F. C. Quimby, all of Laurel.
Active pallbearers were: L. B. Geddies, O. G. Goodwin, Jeff Boyd, J. V. Carr, Homer Denham, and G. W. Thompson.

A resident of Laurel for 60 years, Mrs. C.D. (Minnie) Valentine, 90, of 1038 First Avenue, died Wednesday afternoon in a Laurel hospital.
Mrs. Valentine, who was preceded in death by her husband in 1948, was a native of Lauderdale County MS. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Memory Chapel. Drs T.R. McKibbens and G. Elliot Jones will officiate with burial in Hickory Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Valentine leaves a brother, Dr. J.R. Kittrell, Laurel, two nieces Mrs. R.B. (Grace) Irby, Laurel, and Miss Kay Pearson, Washington, D.C. and four nephews, J.L. Pearson and Tom Pearson, both of Kansas City Missouri; W.H. Kitrell, Montgomery Alabama and R.H. Kitrell, Yuma, Arizona.
Memory Chapel is in charge.

John A. Valentine of Soso Dies on Thursday Night

John A. Valentine, a resident of Soso during the entire sixty-six years of his life, died at the family home there at 7:45 Thursday evening, surrounded by his family. Mr. Valentine had been ill several weeks before his death.
He was born in the same community in which he married and reared a splendid family, and where he was known and respected as one of the leading citizens for men, family. He was loved by all who knew him.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Valentine; five children, Leroy Valentine, Clarksdale; Mrs. Bessie Harper, Mrs. Hattie Harper, Lamar Valentine, and Stephen Valentine all of Soso. (One daughter Linnie V. Broome proceeded Mr. Valentine.)
A host of family and friends filled the Soso Baptist Church at the funeral services that were held Friday afternoon at three o'clock. Rev. W. J. Ferguson, pastor of the First Methodist Church, Laurel, was in charge of the services with Rev. S. E. Sumrall assisting. The Masonic bodies had charge of the interment which was in the Union Line Cemetery.
