at Pemberton Manor Nursing Home, will be at noon Thursday at Century Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith, a retired farmer, also had been self-employed in the mowing business and as a cafe owner.
His farm operation ranged from rental of 2.7 acres off River Road Extended in the Buckeye Community, where he lived,
to working with his family on 25 acres leased at Teoc. In 1976 and 1977, Mr. Smith's efforts in the Buckeye produced
Leflore County's first cotton bale, which was hand picked. However, he told the Commonwealth in 1978 that he would
no longer work the land. "With farming," he told the Commonwealth in 1978, "you can get overextended
and then have to stop anyway." He said, "When you sweat for something for a whole year, should should
make more than $150 or $200. "After plowing the cotton myself, chopping and spraying it, I felt I was just
breaking even. When two items, rent and labor, take up half your profits, it is time to quit. I don't think I'll
go back to farming." Mr. Smith grew up on a farm and attended school in Leflore County in the Moore's Lake
area.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie B. Smith. Survivors include two sons, Bobby W. Smith and Claude Gaston,

Moines, Iowa,
