ATCHISON COUNTY
Is situated in the extreme north-western part of the State. This is a new county-first settled in 1840, and in
1860 had 4663 inhabitants. About one-half of the county is level and undulating, and the other half somewhat broken-commonly
calling "rolling" land. The soil is fertile and well adapted to farming and grazing purposes. Corn, wheat,
oats, hemp, and tobacco, are the principal products. Farmers and mechanics are greatly needed, land is cheap, good
water power, unimproved upon the Nishnabotana, Tarkeo, and Rock Creek. Facilities for reaching market are offered
by the Missouri River, which washes the western border of the county, and the St.Joseph and Council Bluffs' railroad
in course of construction, which will traverse the county. See statistical tables for population, amount of unentered
land, &c.
