My Tribute to Richard Pope Helm
My Greatgreat
Grandfather
by Linda (Dyer) Craig
I would like to thank
all of my distant cousins for their help and assistance. Among them,
Dorman Chastain, Diana Dodd, Hugh Arnold, and most of all to Peggy (Belt) Harre
who found the burial information on Richard, James, Columbia and John for me in
an old De Witt, Carroll County Cemetery book on Wharton Cemetery. Until
today the place of burial was unknown.

Richard Pope Helm was born On September 17, 1819 near Warrenton,
Fauquier County, Virginia to Thomas Helm and Joanna (Hathaway) Helm.
He married Joanna Eleanor Smith in Fauquier County and they began their
family there. He sold the farm in Virginia around 1859 and began his
long journey with his wife and children to Carroll County, Missouri.
He and Joanna had many children together.
These children included:
James Thomas, Francis Elizabeth, Joanna Eleanor, Lucinda Jane, Richard
Hathaway, Lina Pope, Harriet Roberta, George William, Henry Clay,
Columbia, Mary Emma, and John. After his wife died in December
of 1864, either during childbirth or from childbirth complications. He
married Rebecca Collett. They had one child together and named him
John G. Helm (probably after his half-brother who had died just a few
years prior) Richard died near Bosworth, Carroll County, Missouri on
October 06, 1879. Richard is buried in Wharton Cemetery, along with
most of his children and more than likely his first wife, Joanna.

James Thomas Helm was born July 18, 1844 in Fauquier County,
Virginia. When he was a young man of about 12 years of age he moved
with his parents and siblings to Carroll County, Missouri. They
arrived in Carroll County between March and June of 1860. Family
stories says that he was always called Major, probably because of his
grandfather, Thomas Helm, military career. Family stories also say
he was killed in route to enlist with the Confederate Army. He died
on October 29, 1864 and is buried in Wharton Cemetery near Bosworth in
Carroll County.

Francis Elizabeth Helm was born on February 8, 1846 and died on August
18, 1847 in Fauquier County, Virginia. She is buried there.
Name of cemetry is not known, but I could imagine it is the same cemetery
that her Grandma and Grandpa Helm are buried in.

John G. Helm was born in Carroll County, Missouri to Richard's second
wife, Rebecca Collett about 1869. It is believed that he migrated to
California to the Sonoma County area and died there about 1920. I
did find him and his mother on the 1880 census in Cedar, Dade County,
Missouri. The 1900 census does show a John G. Helm in the Cottonwood
Township, Yolo County, California, but I am not positive this is
him. I cannot find him on the California Death Index so the year of
date of 1920 may possibly be correct. Apparently his older siblings
lost contact with him, except maybe Emma who also lived in Sonoma County,
but her children no nothing about
him.
