A TRIBUTE TO BIG CREEK CEMETERY

By M. O. Watt of Bosworth, Missouri

This lovely ridge, this landscape fair
there stones of white and brown and gray
Quite well may be reminders all
Of a much forgotten, far gone day.

Near six score years have now gone by
Since a loved one first was buried here
"Twas then a lonely unkept spot
And for a soul so young and near.

Thru out the years that have come and gone
Since that far distant early day
Full many a valiant soul has here been laid.
Within these silent walls of clay.

Some gifted ones with talents rare
And early hopes for wide renown
Are now no doubt reposing here
Within this hallowed ground.

Some boy is blue, some lad in gray
From those dark days of sixty-three
Might well have been, had fate decreed
Some honored Lincoln, Grant or Lee.

Bur cruel Penury in her ever evil way
And with all her power to fail
Chilled their noble urge for fame
And froze them to a life of humble toil.

And each one in his lotted time
Must share the trials that meet us all
And when his time to leave has come
Must ever heed the Master's Call.

But wealth and fame are worldly things
And we have here not long to stay
So let us pay respects to all
Now sleeping here, on each Memorial Day.
