Barbara L. Nelson, age 74, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Carroll County Memorial Hospital. Barbara was born October 27, 1933 in rural Nodaway County, Missouri, the daughter of Roy and Harriett E. (Miller) Riggle. She graduated from Maryville, Missouri High School and attended nursing school in St. Joseph, Missouri.
On December 26, 1952 she married Maurice Lee Nelson in Maryville, Missouri. He preceded her in death on January 20, 2003. Barbara was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Carrollton Immanuel Lutheran Church. She had been employed with J. C. Penney, was a Magistrate Court clerk in Carroll County, was later owner of the Mode O’Day in Carrollton. She was a secretary at the Carrollton Police Station and worked at Main Drug. Barbara is survived by three children, Michael Lee Nelson and wife Susan, Wathena, Kansas, Janice Lynn Marxhausen and husband Karl, Carrollton, Missouri, Mary Denise Anderson and husband Greg, Carrollton, Missouri, two sisters, Carolyn Sears and husband Richard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Virginia Oxley, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, five grandchildren, Amos Nelson and wife Jessie, Newport News, Virginia, Seth and Mary Beth Nelson, Wathena, Kansas, Lauren and Sean Anderson, Carrollton, Missouri. Her parents also preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2008 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Carrollton, Missouri, with Pastor Eric Swyres officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Carrollton, Missouri. Visitation will be from 7-8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri. The family suggests contributions be made to Lutherans For Life in memory of Mrs. Nelson.

Terry Gene Newham, age 62, of Norborne, Missouri, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2008, at North Kansas City Hospital after a brief illness. Terry was born January 25, 1946, to Harold "Pat" and Dorothy (Webb) Newham. He graduated from Norborne High School in 1963. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy where he served for four years. After completing his tour he returned to Norborne where he spent most of his life farming, driving his 18-wheeler, and working in construction. He was baptized into the Baptist faith. On January 3, 1993 he married Emily Elaine Sandy in Rockingham, Missouri. She survives at the home. Terry is also survived by his three children, Michelle Bass and husband Edward, Ashland, MO; Scott Newham and wife Rachel, of Mandeville, LA; Melissa Ewens and husband John, Moberly, MO; and seven grandchildren: Kristen Petty, Jaden Bass; Joshua, Sydney and Chase Newham; and Chris and Drew Ewens; two sisters, Sandra Kay Newham, Columbia, Missouri; and Sue Wagaman, Altamonte Springs, Florida. His parents, and a brother, Larry Newham, preceded him in death. There will be a visitation service to honor Terry's life on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 from 7-8:00 p.m. at Gibson Funeral Home, Norborne, Missouri. The family suggests contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Terry.

Archie Lee Newman, age 84, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Monday, February 27, 2006 at Carrollton Life Care Center. Archie was born to Ord Clede and Ruth Eliza Tomlin Newman on September 27, 1921 at home in the Trotter Township. Dr. D. G. Atwood was the attending physician. Archie attended 1st grade at a 2-room Trotter schoolhouse. Second through eighth grade were spent at the Reynolds school in Carrollton. Grades ninth through twelve were spent at Carrollton High School, where Archie graduated in 1939. Archie and his older brother, Floyd Ely Newman ran a Texaco filling station in 1939 and 1940. Also during this time, Archie worked as a hedge fence post cutter. Archie also worked at the Brockmeier Oil Co. Archie was reunited with his brother Floyd in California and found work as a machinist. Archie and Martha Ruth Riggins were married on March 15, 1942 at Cupid’s Corner in Yuma Arizona. She preceded him in death on April 18, 1995. He was in the 62nd Battalion of the US Naval Seabees. Archie attended Missouri Valley College and graduated in the spring of 1949 with a degree in business administration. He owned and operated Newman Insulating Co. In 1953, Archie began his teaching career at Bogard, Missouri until Bogard School District consolidated with Carrollton and taught the 1979-1980 school years at Carrollton. Archie was a member of the Carrollton Church of Christ and served as an elder. He had served as a civil defense officer and farmed. He was an avid reader and loved to travel. Archie married Myrtle Olivene Harper on August 9th, 1997 at the Carrollton Church of Christ in Carrollton. She preceded him in death on July 24, 2004. He is survived by four children, James Eugene Newman, Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Thomas Lloyd Newman, Carrollton, Missouri, Sharon Jane Purdy, Cole Camp, Missouri, Debra Kay Newman, Bonner Springs, Kansas, one brother, Floyd Newman, Carrollton, Missouri, six grandchildren, Shawn Newman, Angel Newman, Kerry Branchcomb, Bruce Saltsgaver, Lesia Smith, Libby Lorenz and twelve great grandchildren. His parents also preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, March 2, 2006 at Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri, with Evangelist Rick Sparks officiating. Burial will be in Trotter Cemetery, Carrollton, Missouri with Military services by Veterans of Foreign Wars Pence-Lovell-England Post #1773, Carrollton, Missouri. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m., until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions be made to the Carrollton Senior Center in memory of Mr. Newman.

Robert L. Newman, age 97, of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at Carroll House, Carrollton, Missouri. He was born August 23, 1907 in Carrollton, Missouri, the son of Robert L. and Martha Tomlin Newman. He attended Reynolds Grade School and Carrollton High School. On March 11, 1931, he married Zelma Austin in Carrollton, Missouri. She preceded him in death on December 21, 1971. Robert was a member of the United Methodist Church of Carrollton. He had worked for Green Quarries, Bryant Restaurant, Lock Feed, Carrollton Livestock Auction and the Carrollton Township. Robert is survived by one son, Bobby Newman and wife Marvella, Carrollton, Missouri, one grandson, Ronald, and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, twin boys, who passed away in infancy on October 5, 1942, one sister, Beulah Newman; and four brothers, Lon, Ord, John and Cal. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 20, 2004 at Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri. Burial will be in Carroll Memory Gardens in Carrollton. Visitation will be from 7-8:00 p.m., Sunday, December 19, 2004 at Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri. The family suggests contributions be made to the family’s choice or Carroll House in memory of Mr. Newman.

Alma (Winfrey) Newsom, age 90, died May 2, 1990 in the Cosada Villa Nursing Center, 8575 Cosada Drive, where she lived. She was born in Carrollton, MO, and lived in this area most of her life. Mrs. Newsom worked for the P bakeries for 15 years until she retired. She was a Methodist. Survivors include a sister, Opal Cowan, Kansas City; two grandchildren, and five great-granddaughters. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today at the McGilley Midtown Chapel.
