RIDGEWAY MISSOURI SCHOOLS

Photo of Ridgeway School house submitted by A. Schaechtel, whose great grandmother, Eva Russell Davis,  attended the Ridgeway school.  The dates on the back of the photo say 1905, 1906 & 1907

Ridgeway's first school was a subscription school conducted in the upper room of a store building. In this school Henry Burgin taught the older children and Mrs. May Harrison taught the younger ones.  The school was soon abandoned and in 1880 a small two room schoolhouse was built with Mark Burrows as principal.  There was one room upstairs and one large room downstairs.  This school continued until 1901 when a two story brick building consisting of four large rooms and a study hall upstairs and five rooms on the first floor, was constructed. In the late 1930's an addition was added, consisting of a large gymnasium, auditorium with large rooms and a study hall upstairs.  This addition was financed by government funds and labor.

On September 14,1951,disaster struck the town of Ridgeway as a fire, believed to have been caused by faulty wiring in the 50 year old building totally gutted the interior of the building and resulted in damages of $200,000.00. Among the irreplaceable losses were many trophies and awards earned by past students and athletes of Ridgeway High School.
