Name of Deceased: Rector Barton Gambrel
Newspaper: Glasgow Weekly Times, Thursday
Date: November 11, 1858
Submitters Name: Kathy McDaniel

Obit: --Died. In this place, on the 5th inst., of Inflammation of the Brain, Rector Barton, son of Thomas and Lavinia Gambrel, aged 10 years, 8 months and 17 days.
Ye mourning friends, why do you weep?
Rector’s not dead, he’s only asleep;
In the arms of God, he now rests
Happy above, forever blest.
So bright a flower, doth rarely bloom
In this bleak world of woe and gloom;
They find here no genial clime,
No suited prop ‘round which to twine.
At midnight hour, the spoiler came;
Pulse ceas’d, and then out went the flame.
How plainly shown, how vain a strife,
Can mortal make, for human life.
A mother’s arms tried hard to hold,
That lovely soul in its clay mould;
A Sister’s tears, were vainly shed;
God spoke: to him, his spirit fled.
