Obit: Marion L. Cox, Jr., age 51, a lifetime resident of Carl Junction, MO, passed away at 2:09 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Freeman Hospital Emergency Room of an accidental drowning.
Born June 3, 1956 in Joplin, he was a 1974 graduate of Carl Junction High School. In his early life he worked many years at Deem's Family Center and then at Eagle Picher Precision Products, where he was promoted to Lead Man. He began his career with the Joplin Fire Department on January 7, 1995 and was promoted to Driver Engineer in July 1998. He became a Captain in July of 2001 and Acting Battalion Chief in November of 2007. He pursued his Associate in Arts degree in Fire Science at Crowder College and was due to graduate in May. He had also attended Ozark Christian College and M.S.S.U. He had worked part time for METS in Joplin and was a Captain with Carl Junction Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a former member of Carl Junction Lions Club. He was a member of Carl Junction Lodge No. 549; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Joplin and Smithfield Christian Church.
On June 1, 1985 he married Claudia J. Thomas at Smithfield. She survives.Additional survivors include two sons, Mark T. Cox and Mike L. Cox, both of the home; his mother, Mary L. Alford Cox of Carl Junction; his sister, Sharon Wilkins and husband Tim of Carl Junction; his mother-in-law, Norma Thomas of Carl Junction; two sisters-in-law, Mariann York and husband Jerry and Joyce Willers, all of Carl Junction; three nieces; two nephews; two great nieces and one great nephew.He was preceded in death by his father, Marion Lawrence Cox, Sr. and his father-in-law, O.H. Perry Thomas, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at Memorial Hall at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 26th with Jim Taylor, Michael Banes and Clair Uitts officiating. Joplin and Carl Junction Fire Departments and METS staff will serve as honorary pallbearers and will be seated as a group along with their families. Interment will follow at Carl Junction Cemetery with Mitch Randles, James Perkins, Gerald Ezell, Bill Dunn, Joe Perkins, Scott Skogland and Jared Richmond serving as active pallbearers. The family will receive friends at Memorial Hall from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marion L. Cox, Jr. Scholarship Fund established to help those seeking fire safety educations in care of Parker Mortuary.
OFF-DUTY FIREFIGHTER DIES IN KAYAK ACCIDENT
CARL JUNCTION, Mo. An off-duty firefighter died at a local hospital on Saturday after authorities found him trapped in a submerged kayak on Center Creek, according to a release from the Carl Junction Fire Department. Marion Cox Jr., 51, of Carl Junction, had been out kayaking with his son in the creek when his craft apparently capsized at about 1 p.m. His son was not injured.
"He'd been on our department for quite some time," Deputy Fire Chief Darrell Donham said. "It'll be hard for several of our guys for several days. We're just trying to take everything hour by hour." The victim was transported by air ambulance to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin,
where he later was pronounced dead.

Obit: Leola Marie Carrick, 84, Sarcoxie, died at 11:44 a.m. Sunday, March 23, 2008, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, as a result of an automobile accident March 17, 2008. She was born Nov. 11, 1923, in Seneca, Mo., to Grover Raymond and Liddie Ida Lea (Tosh) Cox. Leola was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker and worked at the Bronc Buster Restaurant in Diamond. She is survived by six children and their spouses, Sandra and Bruce Dellard, Ohio, Debra Francisco, Missouri, Roger and Carlotta Laws, Kentucky, Janice and Randy Reeves,
Missouri, Jiggs and Rita Carrick, Missouri, and Richard Carrick, Missouri; her twin sister, Leila Mae Ferguson, Missouri; 13 grandchildren; and 14
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters; three children; and two great-grandsons.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, at Clark Funeral Home Chapel, Granby, with Pastor Keith Brumfield officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, north of Granby. Pallbearers will be Mike Hamm, Brent Skinner, Leroy Housh, Amos Carrick, Cory Carrick and Jeff Carr. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Granby.

Obit: Ethan Lee Cory, age 6, of Joplin, Mo., became one of God's angels on Tuesday, July 17, 2007, following a swimming accident.
Ethan was born on July 12, 2001, in Joplin the son of John and Lauren Cory. He attended kindergarten at Kelsey Norman and Royal Heights Elementary Schools. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Ethan is survived by his parents, John and Lauren Cory, of Joplin; two brothers, Joshua and Samuel Cory, both of the home; one sister, Savanah Fields, of the home; paternal grandmother, Mary Turner, Dennison, Kan.; maternal grandparents, Olivia and Jim Howard, Birmingham, Ala., Susan and Rod Wilson, Miami, Okla., Mike and Karla Cope, Fayetteville, Ark., and Denver Miller, Miami; maternal great-grandparents, Madge Housh, Miami, Betty Howard, Midland, Texas, and Gertie Miller, Miami; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Ethan's sweet smile and fun loving spirit is a gift that will be treasured forever.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church. Dr. Phillip McClendon will officiate. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park
Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Jason McBryde, Josh Beck, Josh Cope and Derrick Davis. There will be no formal visitation. Friends may call during regular visiting hours at Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Chapel.
