Obit: MET DEATH ALONE
Wm. H. Sampson Fell 195 Feet Down A Shaft and Was Crushed
Wm. H. Sampson, a miner 34 years old; residing at 1018 Taylor Avenue, and employed at the B. C. Mine on the Bequa lease west of the city, met a horrible death at about 2 o'clock this morning by falling 195 feet down in the shaft. Sampson was employed at the mine as engineer and pump man on the night shift, and just how he met death will probably never be known as he was alone at the time of the accident.
About 1:30 this morning Chas. McGrearr, an engineer at a near by plant, noticed the pumps at the B. C. Mine were not running just right, and decided to pay Sampson a visit. When he arrived at the mine Sampson was not to be seen, and thinking that he was probably looking after something
in another part of the plant, waited sometime for him to make his appearance. He became alarmed at his absence and began a thorough search of the plant for the missing man. Unable able to find him he came to the conclusion that an accident had befallen him, and called Archie Brown and Shorty Ferguson, who were employed as engineers at near by plants. Brown and Ferguson were lowered into the mine and to their horror, was found a mass of crushed and bleeding humanity.
From circumstantial evidence it is supposed that Sampson had gone to the shaft to either adjust the pump or the lubercator, and in so doing lost his balance, falling headlong to the bottom, 195 feet below.
The deceased is well known in Joplin, having resided in the city from childhood. He has devoted his time from early manhood to mining and was considered an expert mine and pump man. The deceased leaves a widowed mother and younger brother, besides a wife and two children.
He was a member in good standing of the Modern Woodman of America.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Joplin.BACK- Jasper County, MO Genealogy Trails
