Pinckard, The Missouri handbook, St. Louis, 1865, 162 pgs. Transcribed by Donna Walton Is situated in the northwestern part of the State, and contains an area of 530 square miles. The surface of the county is generally level or slightly rolling, and the soil admirably adapted to the production of all kinds of grain, grasses, fruit and vegetables that flourish in this latitude.  Stock-growers will find here an excellent location for the profitable prosecution of that enterprise. Lead has been found in several localities, and banks are already opened near Utica, and at other points in the county, which will in some measure compensate for the scarcity of timber. Principal towns Chillicothe, Utica, Bedford, and Dawn. Population in 1860, 6,833.
