THE ALLEN FAMILY OF WEBSTER COUNTY, MISSOURI

From: THE MARSHFIELD MAIL

Thursday, March 16, 1905

There is only one man living in Webster County who has lived here longer than old UNCLE BILLY ALLEN, who resides six miles West of Marshfield. SPENCER MARLIN has lived here longer than any man in the County.

UNCLE BILLY’S father, JAMES MADISON ALLEN, the founder of the Allen family in Webster County, was born in Virginia in 1800. He moved to Tennessee at an early age, where he married MISS JANE H. TAYLOR, in 1819. MISS TAYLOR was a cousin to ZACHARY TAYLOR, the famous Indian scout, Texas warrior, Mexican fighter and later, President of the United States.

MR. and MRS. ALLEN remained in Tennessee until 1836 when they, with their six living children, started for Missouri. One child was born while they were on the road, and one after settling here.

MR. ALLEN was the man who settled what is now known as the GAYFORD farm. He lived on this farm until the clost of the War, when he sold it to JOHN FOSTER, father of the clothier of that name in Marshfield. MR. FOSTER sold it to the widow GAYFORD, who built the large barn upon it. MR. ALLEN moved to Wright County, where he resided until his death in 1888, he being 88 years old. MRS. ALLEN preceded her husband to that “Better Land” by several years, dying in September of 1862.

MR. and MRS. ALLEN were the parents of nine children, three boys and six girls. ELIZA JANE was born about 1820, JOSEPH was born in 1822 and died in infancy, MALISSA was born in 1825. ROBERT and ELIZABETH (twins) were born in 1827. SUSAN was born in 1830 and died while young. ADELINE was born in 1834 and WILLIAM in 1836. EMMALINE, the youngest child, was born in 1838. She died at the age of seven.

With the exception of WILLIAM and EMALINE, the children were all born in Tennessee. WILLIAM was the child born on the road, at the home of HARRY FYAN’S grandmother, the widow HARRIS.

ELIZA JANE ALLEN married ISAAC COTTRELL, a popular school teacher of pioneer days. They became the parents of three girls and four boys. All their descendants are in the South.

MALISSA married WILLIAM HYDE. To them were born three boys and two girls. One girl died while young. MITCHELL HYDE married MISS LEMA KEYS in Kansas. They reside in that State. JOSEPH HYDE is a partner in the abstract firm of HYDE and HAMILTON in Marshfield. He married MISS LURINDA HAMILTON, a descendant of the PATTERSONS. MARTHA married LINWOOD WILLIAMS, a prosperous farmer and stock raiser on the Osage. ROBERT married EMMA SHANNON, a daughter of JUDGE SHANNON, who lives Northeast of Marshfield. ROBERT and JOSEPH own a large farm, East of Marshfield, which joins the Wright County line.

ROBERT ALLEN married MISS ELIZA GALLEHAR. They had eight children, two boys and six girls: JAMES P., SARAH JANE, MILISSA, MARY, LaFAYETTE, MARTHA, MALINDA, and EMMALINE. James P. married MISS JANE MORRIS, sister of ROBERT MORRIS of Springfield. MR. and MRS ALLEN live in Roan County, Kansas. SARAH JANE married BURL WILLS, who lives in Arkansas. A MR. BRAZZELL, another Arkansan, wooed and won MALISSA for his bride. MARY married JAMES WILLIAMSON of Green County. They have eight children. LaFAYETTE won a Greene County bride in the person of ELLA ANDREWS. He now lives in Roan County, Kansas, where he is County Treasurer. MARTHA was twice married. Her first husband, a MR. REYNOLDS. Her descendants all live in Greene County. MALINDA married IRWIN JENKINS.

McDONALD COUNTY, MISSOURI MARRIAGES

Continued from Page 21, Vol. 3, No. 1 (Individual No. 9) – Oct., 1970, FOUR STATES GENEALOGIST.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: It has been my practice to not publish any material published by other persons or firms, even though I may have obtained the material myself and would be under no obligation to refrain from publishing the same, even though they may have copyrighted their material. As long as a person can prove they obtained material such as this themselves, and did not “lift” it from the publication of another per son of firm, then they cannot accurately be accused of copyright infringement. You will recall that our previously published McDonald Co. marriages were begun in FSG prior to the publication of McDonald County marriages by Hodges and Woodruff. I cannot see that I am under any obligation to cease my own publication of these marriages, inasmuch as they were taped back in December, 1969, and were obtained by my own efforts, which I can easily prove. Inasmuch as some of you who do not have access to Hodges and Woodruff’s publication of these marriages may obtain benefit from these, I am going ahead with my own publication of the same in FGS, since we began our publication of these marriages prior to the date of the Hodges and Woodruff publication.)
