Howard W. Garrett

Howard W. Garrett, age 59, distributor for a petroleum company and widely known in Missouri Republican circles, died at 5:20 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the St. Francis Hospital.
His death occurred after a year’s illness.
Mr. Garrett was born May 18, 1889 in Arkansas, the son of the late Jesse Olive McClaskey and Amasa H. Garrett. For the last seventeen years, he has been a resident of Maryville.
His home is located at the north edge of Maryville. He was affiliated with the A. F. and A. M. Lodge of Clearmont.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 o’clock Friday afternoon at the Price funeral home by the Rev. Ted Masters of Grant City. Burial will be in the Clearmont cemetery.

Out-of-town relatives who are here include three brothers, Ned Garrett, Parnell; Andrew Garrett, Delta, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. John Garrett, Denver, Colo.; two nephews,
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Garrett, Fort Sheridan, Ill.; Howard Harrison, Denver, Colo.; and a niece, Mrs. W. A. TerHar, Portland, Oregon. John Wickman, a close friend,
is expected to arrive from his home in Wichita, Kas.

Mr. Garrett was owner of the Garrett Oil Co. that was distributor for the Mid-Continent Petroleum Co. In this business Mr. Garrett was the owner of seven oil stations and leased another.
He started in the oil station business in Clearmont and still owned the D-X station on Highway 71 there. Prior to entering the oil business, Mr. Garrett was in the hardware and lumber business.
He was associated with his father, the late A. H. Garrett, in the business for many years. After A. H. Garrett died, his son-in-law, the late Woart Harrison operated the Garrett lumberyard in
Clearmont that is now operated by former county judge Everett Gray. Mr. Garrett also was interested for about ten years in the Garrett-Curfman lumber yard in Wilcox.

Mr. Garrett was widely known for his activities in the interest of the Republican party, but he steadfastly refused to seek any office.
The only exception was that he was Republican committeeman in Atchison township for many years prior to moving to Maryville.
In his political circles Mr. Garrett gained the friendship not only of township and county officers, but of congressmen and senators.

This obituary appeared in the Thursday, March 10, 1949 edition of the Maryville Daily Forum, Maryville, Missouri

By the way, the given name Woart isn't a typo.  I have a tombstone photo (graveyard in Illinois) to prove it. - Alice Horner src.#1
