LOERWOOD DAVIS CALLED BY DEATH-
OBIT - Submitted by Christi Scovel- Src #1
In the passing of Loerwood Davis the community loses one of its
substantial citizens. He will be remember as having been engaged in the
mercantile business for more than
12 years; and for 8 years he served as County Clerk of Oregon County. He
was the son of John and Margaret Davis, and was born near Springfield, Mo., on
April 29th.
He was 1 of 6 children, the other 5 having preceded him in death; namely they
were John, Loerwood, William, Henry and Frank, have all died within the past 5
years;
the sister Adeline, had precede the brothers in death. The deceased
departed this life Sat. night at 9:55, Jan, 16, 1943, after a lingering illness
of many weeks,
during which time he had submitted to an operation at Springfield, but to no
avail. During this illness he was tenderly cared for by his wife, assisted by
relatives
and many friends. He had wanted for nothing that loving care
could give him. On March 6, 1881, he was united in marriage to Nancy Elizabeth
Wasson, of
Sharp Co., Ark. After farming for 9 years he moved to Thayer where
he has since resided. Having no children of their own they reared 8
others. His wife having
passed away he was married the second time, taking a bride in his declining
years. Mrs. Minnie Isenhower, of Koshkonong, on July 15th, 1941, this union was
very fortunate
as she has proven a most congenial helpmate for him and especially so during his
illness, where she watch constantly at his bedside. Brother Davis had ever
been
an active man and refused to grow old. He was a member of the Odd Fellow
Lodge though not active in recent years. He had become a Christian
in early youth, was
a charter member of the Thayer Christian Church and had been instrumental in
establishing the church some 50 years ago, and through the years had served
faithfully as an
elder of the church. The day of his death had not overtaken him as a thief
in the night, Not only had he made disposition of his worldly goods but had
prepared in detail his funeral service, choosing songs, Nearer My God to
Thee, and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere. The funeral was conducted from the
Carr Funeral
Home by the pastor of the Christian church, L. R. Norton, assisted by Rev. Lynch
and Rev. Arnold. The violin which Brother Davis had used for many years was
played
in solemn stains by Rebecca Lynch accompanied by Virginia Sloan at the piano.
A ladies quartet consisting of Mesdames Norton, Mooney, Lynch and Jacobsen sang
the
requested songs closing with Asleep in Jesus. Interment was made beside
relatives in Thayer Cemetery [The Thayer News Fri. 22 Jan 1943, p1]

who died from a heart attack Thurs, afternoon, April 3. The
Davis' ahve lived in the city of Thayer for the past 53 years and have been
prominent in social and business circles during this time. Many are the
friends
and acquaintances that are saddened by her death. Nancy Elizabeth Wasson,
daughter of Alex and Sarah Wasson, was born Feb. 26, 1864, in Sharp county, Ark.
On March
6, 1881, she was united in marriage to Loerwood Davis and although they were not
blessed with children of their own, yet they raised, or partly raised 8
children,
thus giving evidence of the fine motherly heart that beat within her breast.
Following their marriage they lived on the Davis farm for 9 years, following
which they moved
to Thayer where they have resided since. The deceased was ever an
industrious worker and a great home maker and a thoughtful and loving wife.
She had become a
Christian at the age of 14. Both she and her husband were charter
members of the Thayer Christian church in which they were ever intensely active
so long as health
permitted. The deceased was a member of the Rebekah Lodge. She had
been in poor health for a long period of time and had also been handicapped by
failing eyesight.
All that can be said of a faithful wife and a loving helpmate can be said of
her. She leaves to mourn her departure, aside from her husband, a sister, Mrs.
W. L.
Nicks of Denver, Colo. A brother Dee Wasson, of Fort Smith, Ark., a niece,
Mrs. Bessie McClure of Austin, Tex; and a nephew, Arno Wasson of Cabool, MO.

IN MEMORY OF L. D. DAVIS-
Submitted by Christi Scovel- Src #1
To the memory of L. D. Davis who was born in Murry County,
Georgia, Sept. 26, 1845, and departed this life at his home near Garfield on
Tues., Apr. 13, 1915,
and was at death 69 years, 6 months and 18 days of age. He came to this
county when a boy, in 1859, and lived first at Thomasville, which at that time
was the
most important town in this part of the state, being the county seat of a large
territory composed of this county, Howell and part of Shannon and Texas
Counties.
From Thomasville the family moved and located on Frederick, on the farm where he
lived at the time of his death. He married about the close of the war to
Mary Hill,
who still survives him and these children: Mary Jennie, Myra, Ethel, William,
Alfred, and Ray. In passing of "Rance" Davis, as he was generally
known, Oregon
County looses one of its best known and most universally like citizens.
His home was of the true Southern style, the latch string always hanging on the
outside.
And it said of him that he extended the hospitality of his home to friend
and stranger alike;
that no one was ever turned from his door who asked for entertainment and that
all who came and sit at his board were made to feel welcome and went their way
feeling
the inner consciousness of the generous treatment accorded them and of the many
little kindness shown by both word and act. "Rance" was of a jovial
disposition
and always optimistic, never letting the cares of life interfere or show in his
face. He never seemed to specially care if he made money, but had a good
farm,
a nice home and lived comfortably and enjoyed whatever pleasures come his way,
and tried to bring happiness into the lives of all his neighbors and associates.
Although quite young he entered the Union Army and served as a private soldier
with more or less distinction during the war of the rebellion.
He was converted and joined the M. E. Church in 1885, and lived a consistent
Christian, practicing his religion in every day life, being a member of the
Garfield congregation.
He was laid to rest in the New Salem Cemetery lot at 1 o'clock
Wed., Apr 14 in the presence of a host of friends and relatives who had gathered
there to observe the last sad rites and pay their respects. Rev. Sanders,
his pastor, preached the funeral sermon.
The South Missourian-Democrat joins with the many friends of
the family in extending words of comfort and cheer, in this their darkest hour,
and encourage them with
this thought; If they live as he did, they will see him yet again. [Southern
Missouri Democrat 29 Apr 1915]
